New family fun center opens in Normal

NORMAL -- Tim and Jacquie Guzinski don’t mind other people’s children bringing the mess to their place.

With two young children of their own, they opened a new fun center in Normal this week that features activities many parents don’t want their children doing at home: painting on the walls; throwing slime balls that stick on the walls; digging in sand; and playing in water, for example.

Make a Mess Kids Fun Center, 1503 E. College Ave., near Alexander’s Steak House, is not the typical fun center packed with video games and Skee-Ball machines that pump out tickets used to redeem prizes.

No tokens. No tickets. No prizes. Just play.

“We’re a completely token-free center,” Tim Guzinski said. “The fun isn’t determined by the amount of money you spend.”

Parents and toddlers under 2 get in free. Children ages 2 to 4 pay $6 admission, while those ages 5 and older pay $8. Time is unlimited.

Activities are geared for children 14 and under, he said.

The 11,000-square-foot playroom occupies the former Little Village Treasures gift shop, which closed in July.

The Guzinskis knocked out some walls to create one large open room, with another 3,500-square-foot room where families can have birthday parties. The banquet room seats about 100 and has a big-screen TV where parents can watch their favorite show or keep an eye on their children. Images from security cameras throughout the facility will be viewable from the TV.

“We’ve got just one exit, and we really wanted to step up the security so parents could sit back and relax, without worrying or chasing around their children,” Tim Guzinski said.

The Guzinskis also built a two-story, 1,100-square-foot climbing gym called “The Swamp,” with a 12-foot-by-12-foot ball pit, and a separate 30-foot inflatable obstacle course.

They also bought equipment from Teddy Set Go!, which closed at the Shoppes at College Hills in Normal in April, so children can make-their-own stuffed animals.

They installed a snack bar that serves pizza, hotdogs, soft pretzels, grilled cheese sandwiches, breadsticks, chips, candy and beverages. For healthier selections, the bar serves fruit cups and baby carrots.

The rest of the room is broken up by small, temporary walls to create some separation for various play areas: an art room with a dry-erase wall and several canvases for painting; “Slime City,” were children can throw various slime balls at targets on a wall; a “dino dig” area with sandboxes; a small pond to catch fish with magnetic poles; a “dreamland” for dress up and tea parties; an area with inflatable blocks to build forts; and a walled-off toddler room with soft toys, a slide and other games for ages 4 and under.

The fun center also has a karaoke machine, a foosball table, an air hockey table, a triangular air hockey table for three-person play, a basketball game and a lounge area.

Hours are 10 to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday and noon to 6 p.m. Sunday.

" I am shocked at all of the inappropriate comments posted. Those people should be ashamed of themselves. Maybe the reason there are so many misbehaved children is that their parents aren't parents at all but big, overpayed children who would rather drink alcohol and complain than spend quality time with the gifts God has given them. Anyone who feels negatively about a place where kids are able to enjoy themselves needs to contemplate their own motives. Are you jealous? "

Mom of 3 kids wrote on Nov 8, 2007 8:18 AM:

" This sounds like a wonderful new place to take the kids to. I don't think it will replace the Children Discovery Museum because they have totally different activities from each other. I can't wait to take the kids to it.When I go to these places I don't just leave my kids to run around by themselves, I am right there playing along with them, if I am able to. So if there is any problems with pushy kids I can correct that right away or they come tell me. Pushy kids are not going to stop my family having fun. Pushy and mean kids can be anywhere ( schools, playgrounds, even on your block). But there are also many pushy mean adults out in the world too. I love taking my 3 children to real nice restaurants and nice places to visit, like art museums (They love when they get to go to those places and get all dressed up) . It shows them the finer things in life, not just showing them that all there is in life is macroni and cheese, pizza and video games. "

" How are your meals ruined by somone else's kid screaming and misbehaving? When I see or hear a breakdown by a child, I am just thankful that it is not me having to deal with the child and it makes me feel sympathetic for the parents who are dealing with it. It is all about attitude. You need to lighten up. Kids are unpredictable - they're kids! It's adults pouting, throwing fits, having to have everything their way that drive me crazy! "

" I think it sounds great. I don't know if I will take my passive three year old for the same reasons as other parents have voiced about our kids being pushed around and it would probably be by the same kids that are riding across town in SUV's watching movies. I talk to my child while in the car, I take time for her and she knows her manners. Second, for those complaining about child free restaurants, how many of you are smokers who felt the smoking ban was unfair against you? Who do we have to please next? "

OK wrote on Oct 26, 2007 4:30 PM:

" Great they have a place like this. If your kids cannot be quiet eating out take them there or one of number of other places geared for kids (chucky cheese, etc), but don't take them to the nicer places that adults frequent. I have lost track of the number of meals ruined by uncontrolled kids. Thanks for your cooperation. "

" well, despite the negativity about tangent issues, I'm really glad someone has taken the plunge and opened such an innovative place. I love taking my 21-month son to the Discovery Museum, and I don't think this will REPLACE the museum, only provide an alternative. And since he's too young to spend hours anywhere, I'm REALLY glad it won't be expensive to take him (though, I'd happily pay more than $0 for a place to run around this winter!) I'll just be sure to sanitize him when we leave... it's not going to stop me from taking him there! Many thanks, Tim and Jacquie. "

" What a wonderful place this is; my girls, ages 7 and 9 love it! To those who are being negative without first going I must ask, "Why?" It seems so silly to be so bitter about another place in town to take the kids where they can run, play, pretend, and interact. If it is not your "cup of tea," fine. Just don't bad mouth it unless you have first hand experience! "

" I hope parents keep an eye on their kids and tell them they need to follow the rules. I have 3 kids and they know that if they don't follow the rules and be kind to others, we will leave immediately. I get compliments from other people on how well behaved my children are when we do go out. Parents, just take control, it does work. My kids know they have to follow rules even when they become adults. Raise the kids, don't let TV /video games do it for you. "

It really does look like a neat place to take your toddler. I hope they sanitize the balls in their ball pit each night like Pro Putt does. We should really fear for the livelihood of the Children's Discovery museum next! "
