Teen charged in PTHS guns case waives jury trial
PONTIAC — There will be no jury trial for one of the teens accused of bringing guns to Pontiac Township High School to sell. In a hearing Wednesday, Sean Sullivan, 16, of Odell waived his rights to a jury trial in favor of a bench trial. That means Livingston County Circuit Judge Harold Frobish will hear the evidence and testimony and then decide whether to convict or acquit Sullivan. Sullivan faces a dozen felony weapons possession charges, six accuse him of bringing the guns onto a school bus and six accuse him of bringing them into the school. He was charged as an adult. Police say Sullivan stole six handguns from his father and brought them to school on Aug. 28. A student saw him with the guns on a school bus and alerted a police officer at the school, according to reports. The school was locked down and searched, and police reported finding the guns in a bag in Sullivan’s locker. Sullivan reportedly told police he planned to sell the guns to Martin Huerta Jr., 15, of Saunemin. Huerta faces the same weapons charges plus a cocaine possession charge in the case. A third teen charged as a juvenile with handling one of the guns was acquitted last month. Sullivan is scheduled to return to court Nov. 21. Huerta is expected to go to a jury trial next month. Sullivan and Huerta remained in custody at the McLean County Juvenile Detention Center. |
