BLOOMINGTON – PrairieThunder defenseman Cory Laylin and forward Don Parsons earned International Hockey League awards for their performances in Bloomington’s season-opening 5-1 victory at Flint on Saturday, the league announced Monday.

Parsons, who plays right wing, was named the Forward of the Week, while Laylin earned the Defenseman of the Week honor. Other players earning weekly honors were Kalamazoo center Mike Bickley as the Rookie of the Week and Fort Wayne’s Kevin Reiter as the Goaltender of the Week.

Parsons scored a power-play goal, assisted on two others and finished with a plus-1 rating to help the PrairieThunder snap a five-game losing streak dating back to last season.

Laylin scored twice and assisted on Parson’s goal. Laylin also finished with a plus-1 rating and scored his goals back-to-back during a 4:12 span at the end of the second period and the beginning of the third period. The goals extended the PrairieThunder lead to 4-1 lead as the team won at Flint for the first time in franchise history in four games.

Last season the Bloomington PrairieThunder had only two players earn Player of the Week honors the entire 76-game season.

Other PrairieThunder players nominated for weekly awards were goaltender Derek Dolson and rookie Kyle McCullough.

Dolson stopped 33 consecutive shots fired at him over the final 59 minutes, 25 seconds in recording his first victory as a member of the PrairieThunder. Flint’s only goal came on its first shot 35 seconds into the game.

McCullough, who played at the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth last season, not only scored his first professional goal early in the second period against Flint, but it was also the team’s first of the season.
