Out Loud: CCHS' Culik standing tall in the field
BLOOMINGTON — Nick Culik appears to epitomize the term “well-traveled.” The senior midfielder for the state-bound Central Catholic boys soccer team was born in South Korea before immigrating to Batavia, N.Y. After 15 years in the western New York community, Culik again moved to Bloomington-Normal. Any chance he will stick around after graduating this May? Nope. Culik hopes to go back to the East Coast and attend Providence College, American University or George Washington University. Before a recent practice, the Pantagraph caught up with a young man who said Ringo Starr was his favorite Beatle. Q: You lived near Buffalo, N.Y. What is the main difference between that area and here? A: “It’s a lot flatter here, obviously. There’s really no difference between the people.” Q: You said you are a Buffalo Sabres fan. How did you feel when Brett Hull scored the controversial game-winning goal in the 1999 Stanley Cup Finals? A: “That was a tough moment. Really tough. Clearly his skate was in the (goal) crease. There’s nothing you can do about it.” Q: A lot of people have gone over Niagara Falls in a barrel. Would you be willing to try that experiment? A: “Sounds interesting, but probably not.” Q: How do the winters compare between Bloomington-Normal and Buffalo? A: “They’re much milder here. A lot less snow. Those are probably the two main differences.” Q: How tough was the transition of switching high schools? A: “It was definitely a big transition going from where you’ve lived your entire life. Going to Central (Catholic) made it really easy. It was a pretty smooth transition.” Q: You said you enjoy watching “SportsCenter.” Which anchor would you like to do a show with? A: “That’s tough. Stuart Scott would be interesting. I like the way he conducts his shows and interviews.” Q: Which character from “Seinfeld” would you love to be? A: “I really like (Cosmo) Kramer. His overall demeanor would be very fun.” Q: You are not the tallest tree in the woods. How do you use your lack of height as an advantage on the soccer field? A: “I think it’s an advantage because people don’t expect a lot from you. They kind of take a look at just your height and kind of write you off. I use that as an advantage, sneak under the radar.” Q: Is it an advantage or disadvantage to be short on the soccer field? A: “It can be both an advantage and disadvantage. It’s a lot harder when the ball’s in the air. It’s just one disadvantage, though. You’ve just got to use everything else you have.” Q: If you went to Providence College, you would be a Friar. What would your ideal school mascot be? A: “I’m going to go with the Tigers. That was the mascot of my elementary school.” Q: You drive a minivan. How do you feel when you’re driving around Bloomington-Normal in a van? A: “I’ve actually gotten really fond of the van. I don’t know why. It’s just kind of grown on me. It’s pretty fun.” Q: Do you have a nickname for the van? A: “It’s just the minivan.” Q: In geometry, does the Pythagorean Theorem confuse you at all? A: “Yes. I’m not a big math guy.” Q: You said you shagged baseballs for the minor league baseball team called the Batavia Muckdogs. Did you ever catch any balls from some famous players? A: “I wish, but no. Never happened.” Know a varsity athlete who would make a fun “Out Loud” candidate? Send a suggestion to dmakarewicz@pantagraph.com.
