Previews of first round games involving Pantagra-area high school football teams in the IHSA playoffs.

Class 6A

NCHS vs. Danville

Time and place: 7 p.m. today, Normal

Records: Danville 5-4, NCHS 9-0

Radio: WJBC-AM (1230)

Playoff experience: Danville — 15th appearance, 9-14 all-time in playoffs; NCHS — 22nd appearance (12th consecutive), 30-20 all-time

FYI: Top-seeded NCHS defeated No. 16 seed Danville 47-14 last Friday in the regular-season finale. The No. 1-ranked Ironmen will again try to control Vikings’ senior quarterback Kendall Carter, who has thrown for 1,328 yards and 16 touchdowns and run for 512 yards and four scores. Carter had two TD passes last week but was 9 of 31 overall. Defending 6A state champion NCHS has received 662 yards and 15 TDs from senior tailback Dan Moore. Senior quarterback Alex Buck has produced 11 TDs (seven passing, four rushing).

Quoting: “The focus this week is on total team improvement. We tried to steer them (the players) away from Danville and turn the focus on each other and ‘what can we do to improve each segment and each position?’ ” — NCHS coach Hud Venerable

BHS vs. Chatham Glenwood

Time and place: 7 p.m. today, Chatham

Records: BHS 6-3, Chatham Glenwood 8-1

Playoff experience: BHS — 23rd appearance (21st consecutive), 36-22 all-time in playoffs; Chatham Glenwood — 12th appearance, 12-10 all-time

FYI: No. 12 seed BHS shoots for its fourth straight win in a season hamstrung by injuries and suspensions. Junior tailback Darrelynn Dunn has run for 925 yards and 12 TDs despite missing time at midseason with a broken thumb. No. 5 seed Chatham Glenwood is paced by Josh Atwood, who leads the team in rushing (459 yards) and tackles (89). Quarterback David Kaufmann has thrown for 1,228 yards and 6 TDs. No. 10-ranked Glenwood has lost only to Springfield Sacred Heart-Griffin despite losing top running back Tyler Trimberger to a broken fibula in week four.

Quoting: “What I’m most impressed with is their line’s ability to get out and move. I think this is the best offensive line we’ve faced next to (Normal) Community’s. Everybody puts the ball up in their league (the Central State Eight), so it’s a kind of defense geared to stop the pass. It creates a new scheme as far as blocking for us.” — BHS coach Rigo Schmelzer

Normal West vs.

Joliet Catholic

Time and place: 7:30 p.m. today, Joliet

Records: Normal West 5-4, Joliet Catholic 8-1

Playoff experience: Normal West — 6th appearance, 2-5 all-time in playoffs; Joliet Catholic — 31st appearance, 12 state titles, 85-18 all-time

FYI: No. 15 seed Normal West will need a stellar defensive effort to slow down No. 2 seed Joliet Catholic. The No. 2-ranked Hilltoppers lost 21-20 to Chicago Mount Carmel in week one. Since then, they have averaged 50.3 points per game during an eight-game win streak. They have two rushers over 800 yards in Brandon Geiss (936 yards, 15 TDs) and Tyler Hudetz (818, 10 TDs). Quarterback John Ruettiger has thrown for 1,036 yards and 11 scores.

Quoting: “They pound the ball right at you. We’re going to have to get penetration and get to their backs before they get started. We have to limit the big plays, and offensively we’re going to have to establish the run and keep the ball out of their hands. Obviously, we’re the underdogs. But our conference gets us ready for teams like this.” — West coach Darren Hess

Class 2A

Watseka vs.

Flanagan-Woodland

Time and place: 7 p.m. today, Flanagan

Records: Watseka 5-4, Flanagan-Woodland 9-0

GCMS vs. Westville

Time and place: 7 p.m. today, Westville

Records: GCMS 5-4, Westville 9-0

Radio: WGCY-FM (106.3)

Playoff experience: GCMS — 8th appearance, 4th consecutive, 3-7 all-time in playoffs; Westville — 6th appearance, 10-5 all-time

FYI: GCMS boasts three productive ballcarriers in Brandon Luttrell (848 yards), Michael Romshek (616) and Brenton Fairchild (499). Falcons’ quarterback Stephan Birt has completed 35 of 68 passes for 558 yards. " You must be on drugs. Tradition is overrated, just look at Notre Dame! It's all about heart at playoff time. Tradition has never crossed the goal line, but heart and desire have. It's football not chess. Good Luck To All The Area Teams....Create your tradition, one game at a time. "

" I predict all area teams will LOSE...by ALOT...except the teams with tradition, because tradition is hard to stop on the field. "

" Who says West can't beat JC? If all sports have shown this year, anything is possible. Just because it's a "chicago school" doesn't automatically mean they are an amazing team. I live up in chicago now and have to put up with everyone up here acting like the high school football teams are super-human. GO DOWNSTATE FOOTBALL!! "

WHY wrote on Oct 26, 2007 2:02 PM:

" Why in the world are Central Catholic and Eureka playing an evening game on Saturday? I can appreciate the desire to have fans attend the games, that is good for both teams, but how is it that a Saturday evening is more attractive than a Friday evening? I see Normal West is driving all the way to Joliet for a game tonight and that was apparently agreed to by the teams. How is it Eureka can not come 20 minutes from the west on a Friday night? "

" There has been a lot of talk on this site and others about who will win. There are so many unknowns in the first round, especially between two teams who have not faced each other this year. Regardless of who your team is, anyone can win any night. "

" There was also no CCHS, BHS or U-High capsule and they all play tommorrow as well. I am guessing they are only previewing todays games. "
