ISU volleyball essentials
Preview of the Illinois State volleyball team’s games against Drake at 7 p.m. Friday and Creighton at 7 p.m. Saturday at Redbird Arena in Normal. Records: ISU 14-8, 6-5; Drake 6-16, 3-8; Creighton 14-8, 8-3 (prior to facing Indiana State today). Coaches: Amy Farber Knowles is 18-64 in three years at Drake. Kirsten Bernthal-Booth is 81-61 in five years at Creighton. Sharon Dingman is 138-95 in eight years at Illinois State. What to watch for -- As fifth-place ISU attempts to position itself for the Nov. 23-24 Missouri Valley Conference Tournament at Springfield, Mo., it has six home matches in its final seven regular-season dates. -- An inability to kill the ball negated the Redbirds relatively good showing in other statistical categories during last weekend’s losses at Missouri State and Wichita State. Mashing kills has been a point of emphasis in practice the past two weeks, especially for outside hitters Peggy Riessen and Mallory Leggett. -- ISU struggled Sept. 29 during a 3-2 win at Drake, which is led by Valley Player of the Week Angela Bys, a 6-foot-1 freshman outside hitter averaging 4.13 kills per game on .203 hitting. Creighton got the best of the Redbirds in a 3-1 decision at Omaha, Neb., Sept. 28. The Bluejays are led by Player of the Year candidate Kelly Goc, who averages 4.01 kills on .347 hitting. ISU counters with M.C. Richmond, who averages 3.74 kills on .301 hitting. Points of interest -- ISU has won 22 straight against Drake to take a 45-5 lead in the series. The Redbirds have dropped four straight to Creighton, which has cut its all-time deficit to 23-7. Talking the talk -- “I don’t think we’re ever going to see M.C. play as poorly as she did Saturday night (in a six-kill, .083-hitting effort against Wichita State). We’re used to her up at four kills a game hitting over .300.When M.C. does have a night like that, we have to have two or three people just decide to get one more kill a game. That’s what we didn’t have.” – ISU coach Sharon Dingman. -- “I need to make it the best possible situation for my hitters. That means getting one-on-one situations as much as possible. I need to be able to see the court, see what the other blockers are doing and then set the ball accordingly.” – Redbird setter Erin Lindsey.
