Electronics recycler moves into old glove factory

PONTIAC -- AT Recycling primarily focuses on electronic equipment, but it recently found a way to reuse a century-old building.

The business moved last weekend from its 8,000-square-foot office at 415 W. Howard St. to the former site of Nationwide Glove Co., a 20,000-square-foot location at 601 E. Prairie St.

The business collects used electronic equipment such as computers and televisions, salvaging parts for reuse. It has been growing since its inception in 1992, said Director of Operations Ken Ehresman, and bought the larger site last December to renovate.

“Our choices were to build a new facility or find somewhere that we can fit into,” Ehresman said. “We kind of killed two birds with one stone as we found a new building to expand in to and it helped the community by using this building.”

The glove factory was built more than 100 years ago and was originally a shoe factory, said Terry Clark, vice president and general manager of Nationwide Glove Co., based in Harrisburg. It was purchased by the glove company around 1946. The Pontiac location ceased operations last year.

Ehresman declined to release the total cost of the renovations, but the company received a $37,000 grant from the city to pay for half the cost of replacing the building’s 129 windows and improving the parking lot.

The company will host a public open house from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Dec. 14. Ehresman said although it’s been challenging to get the various systems up and running, he is definitely happy with his new location.

Hours of the business are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
