High school volleyball roundup: CCHS claims regional title

Nicole Henson scored nine service points, including three aces, and led the defense with 11 digs as top-seeded Central Catholic High School downed No. 4 Carthage, 25-15, 25-17, to claim the Class 2A Central Catholic Regional title Thursday.

Central Catholic (25-11) got 11 kills from Megan Schmidt and seven kills from Megan Fitzgerald to keep Carthage on its heels. Kristyn Mysker dished out 13 assists while Stephanie Lamb handed out 12.

“I was really impressed with the way everyone played tonight,” said Saints’ coach Emily Kabbes. “Our ballhandling was outstanding and we put out a pretty balanced attack. We’re playing like we know we can.”

Saints roll Petersburg: Schmidt had seven kills while Mysker handed out eight assists as Central Catholic cruised to a 25-11, 25-8 semifinal win over No. 9 Petersburg Porta.

El Paso-Gridley Regional

Bishop Mac prevails: Kankakee Bishop McNamara defeated Eureka, 25-23, 25-17, in the championship match at El Paso.

Eureka (14-18) got 11 kills from Chelsea Prosser. Teammate Sarah Moyer added 14 digs.

Eureka downs EPG: Casie Wherley handed out 12 assists for Eureka and teammate Sarah Moyer had 11 digs in a 25-17, 25-23 triumph over El Paso-Gridley in a semifinal match.

Mattie Fairchild led EPG with 11 assists. Janelle James, Tamara Waugh and Fairchild each had nine digs.

Fieldcrest falls: Kayla Conroy had 23 assists and 12 service points for Fieldcrest (16-11) in a 24-26, 27-25, 25-17 loss to Bishop McNamara in the other semifinal.

Macomb Regional

Camp Point outlasts Olympia: Third seed Camp Point Central defeated No. 2 Olympia 25-18, 15-25, 25-18 in the championship match.

Olympia wins semifinal: Olympia advanced to the regional final with a 25-15, 25-14 win over Beardstown.

Monticello Regional

Monticello clips Clinton: Seniors Shelby Huffman and Sarah Blythe combined for 13 digs but could not stop second seeded Monticello from taking the semifinal win 25-16, 25-16 over Clinton.

Meghan Matthews added seven assists for the Maroons while Blyth and Megan Mitchell had four kills apiece.

PBL Regional

PBL bows out: Despite a match-high 12 service points from Kasey Sanders, No. 5 seed PBL suffered a 25-20, 26-24, regional semifinal loss to No. 4 Champaign St. Thomas More at Paxton.

The Panthers (18-7) got eight kills from Jenna Seibring, seven kills from Jamie Garrell and six assists from Jessica Bender.

Class 1A



Hartsburg-Emden Regional

Dee-Mack claims crown: Haley Thurmond hammered 10 kills to lead No. 1 seed Deer Creek-Mackinaw to a hard-fought 25-20, 25-22 win over No. 4 Hartsburg-Emden in the championship match of the Hartsburg-Emden Regional.

Kate Poorbaugh added 21 assists and Lauren Schmidt 11 digs for the Chiefs (30-4). Lacey Shelabarger had a match-high 13 kills for Hartem.

Chiefs topple Heyworth: Dee-Mack advanced to the regional final by downing No. 6 Heyworth, 25-16, 25-16. Thurmond powered the Chiefs with 11 kills. Brittany Feger had six kills for Heyworth (16-15).

Hartem tips Tremont: Hartem earned its way into the finals with a 25-16, 25-23 win over No. 5 Tremont as Kelsi Ubbenga and Shelabarger had eight kills each for the Stags. Brie Schweigert led Tremont with seven kills.

St. Anne Regional

Dwight takes title: Junior Malorie Kennedy fired off seven service aces against Grant Park to pace top-seeded Dwight to a 25-9, 25-15 regional title win.

Carly Perschnick supplied 12 kills for the Trojans while Amie Hogan had 17 assists.

Dwight halts CPCI: Perschnick posted 12 kills and Hogan had 19 assists to lead Dwight to a 25-14, 25-18 semifinal win over CPCI.

Woodland Regional

Woodland earns crown: Third-seeded Woodland edged No. 2 seed Lowpoint-Washburn 25-20, 25-21 to take the regional title.

Woodland stops Flanagan: Woodland defeated Flanagan 25-22, 25-17 in semifinal action.

Anna Delheimer provided 17 assists for Flanagan. Jackie Russow was top hitter with eight kills.

Argenta-0reana Regional

Mount Pulaski victorious: Christina Stoll recorded eight kills and eight blocks to guide Mount Pulaski to a 25-10, 25-17 championship win over Warrensburg-Latham.

Kaitlyn Kutz chipped in eight kills and eight digs for the Hilltoppers.

Mount Pulaski ousts Blue Ridge: Turner controlled Mount Pulaski’s offense by handing out 12 assists to spark a 25-5, 25-9 semifinal win over Blue Ridge.

Ridgeview Regional

Lexington claims title: Lexington earned the regional crown with a 25-20, 25-18 win over Tri-Valley at Colfax.

Minutemen best GCMS: Lexington moved into the regional final with a 25-12, 25-12 win over Gibson City-Melvin Sibley.

Vikings roll Milford: Tri-Valley posted a 25-12, 25-10 victory over Milford in a semifinal matchup.

Greenview Regional

Illini Central champions: Annie Cave had 10 kills and Kelsey Laugel 16 service points as Illini Central dumped Illini Bluffs, 25-12, 25-19, to capture the regional championship.

Laugel keys victory: Laugel’s 13 points and 25 assists sparked Illini Central past Lewistown, 28-26, 20-25, 25-12, in the semifinals. Cave contributed 19 kills.
