PONTIAC — A retired educator from rural Emington is expected to be nominated to take an open seat on the Livingston County Board.

Republican precinct committeemen and Livingston County Board officials from District 2 met Thursday at the Livingston County Courthouse and recommended Bob Young.

County Board Chairman Bill Flott said he will nominate Young for approval at the Nov. 15 County Board meeting.

If approved, Young will take the District 2 seat left by Andrew Thompson, who resigned at the October board meeting.

During his 33-year career, the lifelong resident of Livingston County was a teacher and then an administrator for schools in Saunemin, Sheldon and elsewhere.

Young answered questions concerning pending issues, including the fate of the county-owned Livingston Manor nursing home and wind farm development.

He said he wants to see low-income nursing home residents cared for, and he hopes interest from the $23 million nursing home construction fund will be used for that.

Concerning wind farms, Young said he wants to see farmers benefit from renting land for wind turbines but he would not necessarily want a wind farm on his own farm.

Young plans to run in the Feb. 5 GOP primary for the seat, which is up for election in November 2008.

Also seeking the seat was Dwight resident Richard Thomas, who recently accepted a job as a full-time nurse at Livingston Manor.

Flott said that county employees previously have been told they cannot work for the county and run for the board.

Thomas said he plans to run in the primary.

" Sounds like a few Hollywood actors are wanting to get on the board... although i liked Robert Young in 'Father Knows Best' and Richard Thomas in 'The Waltons' that was a few years ago and i wonder if these old men are up to serving now? "

" Another dinosaur on the county board. We need young people on the board to bring this county into the 21st century. We get these old farts on here and they don't do anything to inprove the county and they stay there until they die. Get ready for some more same old same old. "

" Being an employee of the county and a county board member is an obvious conflict of interest. Let's see how does Mr. Thomas feel about the sinking ship we call a nursing home?!? Hmmmmmm....... Doesn't take a brain surgeon. "

But, why not, Bill..... wrote on Nov 2, 2007 6:41 AM:

" I think Bill Flott, an educator, wants his own kind. I think highly of educators, but in the case of Bill Flott, he has absolutely NO experience running our county. He has proven this over and over again. Think again, BILL. YOU NEED TO RESIGN BEFORE YOU TOTALLY RUIN US!!!!!!!!! YOU SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF YOUR RECORD!!!!! You are an insult to Livingston County. "
