Breese Central wins Class 2A volleyball championship
NORMAL — Volleyball matches such as Saturday’s Class 2A state tournament final are the reason Breese Central High School coach Jim Cook forces his team to play a killer schedule.
“We’ve been pushed all year,” said Cook after Hampshire pushed his Cougars to the brink before bowing, 25-16, 19-25, 25-21, at Redbird Arena.
Cook, whose team finished 33-8, became the sixth coach in state history to win at least three titles. His others came in 1996 and 2005.
The Cougars’ only returning starter from 2005, Lauren Budde, shared the team lead in kills at 11 with Jessica Hemann, the reigning state high jump champion.
Both were part of last year’s team which fell to Hartsburg-Emden in the Class A final.
“You expect the seniors to step up,” Cook said. “All the seniors have talked about it all the time. It was time to just put up or shut up and we put up.”
Hampshire (37-4) put up a fight with help from Amy Wehrs and Jena Karkos, who finished with 13 and 10 kills, respectively.
In the third-place match, Rachel Hockaday had 17 kills as Maroa-Forsyth (35-1) ended its best season with a 25-14, 25-11 win over Chicago Christian (34-5).
