Blagojevich takes more heat over fired vets

SPRINGFIELD -- Gov. Rod Blagojevich is blaming the federal government for the need to lay off 17 state employees who are veterans, but some lawmakers say the governor should have done more before they lost their jobs.

Twenty people, including 17 veterans were laid off Oct. 31 from security jobs at various Illinois National Guard facilities across the state, including at Decatur Airport. Security duties were assigned to Securitas, a private company founded in Sweden.

Over Veterans Day weekend, Blagojevich directed blame toward the federal government for cutting $1.1 million in funding.

''It's an outrage that at a time when we are working to support our veterans and make their lives better, the federal government would change the rules and cut funding to make it harder for veterans to work,'' he said.

But as most state employees enjoyed a day off Monday, some state lawmakers from both parties pointed blame back at the governor.

State Rep. Bob Flider, D-Mt. Zion, said Blagojevich should have been more outspoken in taking on the federal government before the employees were laid off, not more than a week after.

''I think he should have said: 'I'm going to fight the government,' '' he said.

State Rep. Bill Mitchell, R-Forsyth, said he wondered why Blagojevich, who cut hundreds of millions from the state budget in an attempt to fund health care programs couldn't have found more.

''Gov. Blagojevich certainly found $500 million pretty quickly for a healthcare program,'' he said.

A Department of Military Affairs spokeswoman said that of the people laid off, 12 had taken other jobs within state government and three retired. Others are either on disability or still awaiting a resolution.

" So we can't afford to keep people on the payroll that have already been hired, but Blago can afford to hire his aide's nephew for a 65,000/year INTERNSHIP, DURING a hiring freeze! TO: THERE HE GOES AGAIN: SEN BRADY has written a letter to the editor in this regards. He is co-sponsoring a bill to add the Right to Recall to the IL Constitution. Please read this AND EVERYONE CONTACT YOUR LOCAL OFFICIALS TO SUPPORT THIS! IF THEY DON'T? VOTE 'EM OUT!!! "

" Why isn't anyone talking about the 1.1 million we lost federally? I'm pretty sure the Gov didn't wake up one morning and say,"I think I want to let some veterans go." We lost federal funding! Can anyone tell me why we lost the federal funding? Could it be there is a war going on? Could it be the disasters out in California and also in New Orleans (Which Bush is still trying to help fix with FEMA) Well you know I would expect this kind of talk from the Republican Pantagtraph reader. Also, "there he goes again" He is trying to get his finance planning through the state not the Fedearl Government. Before you criticize do some research and stop jumping on the bandwagon of other idiots that havn't done research. To your future question the news anymore is not a reliable source: Pantagraph, Chicago Trib, etc... I would go to the state website and look up these bills to get accurate information. The news papers tend to sensationalize these stores to get readers. "

" Blago blames the feds for cutting funding for these jobs, yet HE cuts the funding for the LaSalle Veterans Home. There are empty beds because HE won't hire staff. There's a 3 year waiting list to get in. Blago has got to go. "

" Since when does a family who has earnings around $60,000.00 having a hard time making ends meet? We have families in this very community who have a hard time just feeding thier children and they get medicaid. These people barely make it. They always rob peter to pay paul and you want those who make that much money to get free healthcare? Seems we have too many people in this country who want free handouts. If you want something really screwed up, just give it to the government to handle. Hell, the governor spends more on his hairspray alone that some get for food to eat. Let him live in the mansion, cut his paycheck 20,000 dollars and do the budget right. "

" Let see if the math is right. 17 people got laid off. 12 people took other jobs in state gov, 3 retired and "Others are either on disability or still awaiting a resolution". The way I do math is 12 plus 3 is 15. That means that 2 people are either on disability or waiting resolution. Not quite as bad as the newspaper would like for it to sound. Governor Blagojevich is trying to help people with healthcare. The Governor is not perfect, but he does care about the hardworking people in Illinois. I think that it is interesting that State Rep. Bob Flider, D-Mt. Zion, said Blagojevich should have been more outspoken in taking on the federal government before the employees were laid off, just wondering how much State Rep. Bob Flider, D-Mt. Zion did to stop it. Also State Rep. Bill Mitchell, R-Forsyth, said "he wondered why Blagojevich, who cut hundreds of millions from the state budget in an attempt to fund health care programs couldn't have found more", STATE REP. MITCHELL JUST DOESN'T GET IT, ITS CALLED HELPING PEOPLE. "

" Maybe there would be more money for things we need in this state like health care and needs of veterans. If our great and wonderful Gov. would reside in Springfield, and not have money taken from the budget for his transportation to and from Chicago there would be yet more money in our budget. If you do not wish to live in the Govenors mansion then you should be responsible to pay for your own housing and transportation. There are other things that can be cut rather than our schools, the elderly, and our veterans. I work in a nursing home and it is sad to see people's medications switched or stopped completely because medicare has had budget cuts and these items are no longer covered. What is going to be cut next??????????????????????????? "

" Wow! Blabo you are a real piece of work. Yea, blame the feds for this one when you are trying to get your healthcare plan financed. You don't get what you need so you threaten to layoff countless state policemen. Now this. Have you no shame? Get this guy out of office. I am so sick of hearing about his dereliction of duty towards the citizens of illinois. Why has there been no proceedings so far to get a re-call back on the ballot? oh wait. doesn't he have to sign that for it to become law? yea like that will happen. There HAS to be something illinoisians can do with this guy. "
