PONTIAC -- A Livingston County organization will honor a teacher who promotes conservation and agriculture.

The Livingston County Soil and Water Conservation District is seeking nominations for its annual Conservation Education Teacher of the Year award. Education/Executive Director Debbie Ruff said teachers will be honored at the county level and then be nominated for the statewide award.

“It’s a great award and there are so many teachers who deserve it,” Ruff said.

Written nominations should discuss a teacher’s work in natural resource conservation curriculum and projects.

An educator at Saunemin Grade School who won the award about six years ago said she was honored and enjoyed working with students.

“We had a summer program for kids and we did all sorts of activities for conservation,” said librarian Dianne Hanley. “We had a summer enrichment program for several years and activities would include everything from plants to animals.”

Nominations will be accepted through Dec. 14 and can be mailed to Livingston County SWCD, P.O. Box 80, Pontiac, IL 61764. Educators must work in Livingston County and teach at the elementary or secondary level.

The award will be given at the group’s annual meeting, at 7:30 a.m. Jan. 16 at the Pontiac Elks Lodge.
