Saints want the 'trophy'

BLOOMINGTON -- A 13-0 record would suggest perfection. Javier Safford isn’t buying it. | Saints page | CCHS Photo gallery | U Pick 'em contest | Stats

The Central Catholic High School senior receiver would agree the Saints are unbeaten heading into today’s 7 p.m. Class 4A state championship game against top-ranked Addison Driscoll (also 13-0) at Memorial Stadium in Champaign.

But perfect?

Not so fast.

“We’ve been trying to set goals and get better each game,” Safford said. “We still haven’t played our perfect game yet, and we have one last chance.”

The third-ranked Saints seek an effort good enough to snap Driscoll’s record string of six state titles. Driscoll knocked Central out in the second round last year, 28-12, after spotting the Saints a first-quarter lead.

“We’re just excited to get a second shot,” Central senior tailback/linebacker Ryan Waldron said. “As soon as we scored early against them, we were like, ‘This team isn’t perfect.’ We just have to make plays and play our game.

“I didn’t come this far to get second place. I want that trophy.”

The Saints could make history with a victory. Central and New Lenox Providence are the only schools to win state titles in three different classes. The Saints could make it four after winning 2A in 1982, 1A in 1987 and 3A in 1994.

“That would be incredible,” Central senior fullback/linebacker Pat McNeil said. “I think we can do it, definitely. We’ve been watching that tape (of the Driscoll game) since last year. If we all play our best game, we can get it done.”

While the Saints have been tested in the playoffs, beating Quincy Notre Dame 21-14 in the second round and Mount Carmel 35-34 last week, Driscoll has won by scores of 47-19, 42-7, 48-7 and 41-14.

The 48-7 win in the quarterfinals came shortly after the death of longtime Driscoll assistant coach Mike Loconsole, who died of cancer on Nov. 7. The Highlanders attended his funeral on the morning of Nov. 10, then went out and routed Chicago Christian in a 1 p.m. game.

“That’s been a real-life situation for our boys to deal with,” Coach Mike Burzawa said. “They’ve turned into men, and that’s what I’m most proud of. Mike was a great guy and very caring. He always took time for the kids.”

The Highlanders hope to dedicate a seventh straight title to Loconsole. They are led by senior David Schwabe, who has completed 145 of 218 passes for 2,086 yards with 24 touchdowns and two interceptions. Schwabe also is an all-state defensive back whose 25 career interceptions rank No. 3 in state history.

Tailback Tim Franken has rushed for 1,623 yards and 28 TDs, helping Driscoll average 39.3 points and 383 yards per game. The Highlanders have given up 12.3 and 218, respectively.

The Saints will rely on a defense that has held opponents to 10.5 points and 179 yards per game. Senior tackle Zach Eyre has led the way with 115 tackles, including 27 for losses. Waldron has 89 tackles in addition to rushing for 1,824 yards and 24 touchdowns.

“We’ve watched video of that game last year, and we played them real well,” Saints coach Bobby Moews said. “We moved the ball on them, and we defended them pretty well. We just gave up two or three big plays.

“I’m sure they’re confident and pretty well thinking they’re going to win it. But I think our kids are pretty confident. We have nothing to lose.”

Burzawa has reminded his team of how the Saints led early last year.

“We definitely had our hands full with them,” he said. “They’re a team that has shown us a lot of heart.

“They have a tremendous kicking game with their field goal kicker (Michael Fenger, 12 field goals). I think it will come down to field position, and turnovers will be a key. It’s going to be a cold evening, so whoever protects the ball and wins the turnover battle will be more successful.”
