Markham man charged with Pontiac burglary
PONTIAC — A Markham man has been charged after police said he broke into a Pontiac business and then led police on a car and foot chase. Manual Gaines, 37, was jailed Wednesday in lieu of posting $7,500 on two counts of burglary, two counts of aggravated fleeing and one count of reckless driving. Pontiac police were on patrol early Tuesday morning around the area of Vermillion Plaza when someone noticed the sound of glass breaking. Officers later saw a minivan parked next to the broken window of Rent-A-Center, 5 Vermillion Plaza. A man later identified as Gaines was inside the van but sped away after police told him to put his hands up, police said. The man fled west on Illinois 116 through town, crossing back and forth across the median until he pulled onto the northbound Interstate 55 ramp, police said. The driver slammed on his brakes on the ramp, causing a squad car to rear-end the van, police said. The car sustained about $1,500 worth of damage. The man headed north on I-55 and then crossed the median into the southbound lane. The van then left the interstate on the west side, crashed through a fence and drove into a field. The van came to a stop near Livingston County roads 13190 East and 1600 North. A homeowner then told police he saw a male running from a doghouse into the field. Gaines later was found with the help of a Pontiac police dog and a thermal imaging device, police said. Police found four plasma screen televisions worth a total of $11,140 inside the van. The van was stolen in Bloomington, but it had license plates that were stolen in Harvey, police said. Gaines is due to return to Livingston County Circuit Court on Dec. 3 for a preliminary hearing. |
