Quincy may turn to hydroelectric power, a Midwest rarity
Advertisement

QUINCY -- Although hydroelectric power is a rarity in the Midwest, the city of Quincy hopes to harness some of the power of the Mississippi River.

The Chicago Tribune reports that Quincy has received federal permission to explore building electricity-generating turbines next to three existing locks on the river.

Quincy hopes that in about a decade it might produce enough electricity to light its street, operate its water treat-ment plant and save its nearly 41,000 residents money on their utility bills.

Many hurdles remain. The government approval process is lengthy and likely to draw strict review from envi-ronmentalists.

" I can't wait - environmental wacko's who complain about gas consumption and the O-Zone will find some reason to not support Quincy.... People that want others to find alternatives to fuel consumption will always complain when they do. "

" I think that may be a good thing. In fact, I say they should hook nets to the turbines to catch the carp. They're good eats and it will get those nasty things out of the river. "

" I can hear the people now "this will stop the natural swimming path of the carp". "
