Illinois man killed while deer hunting in Wisconsin
SIREN, Wis. -- A deer hunter from northern Illinois died after a companion accidentally shot him as they tracked a wounded deer, officials said Wednesday. Scott Kiefer, 29, of Montgomery, Ill., was killed Monday afternoon about 20 miles east of Siren, Burnett County Medical Examiner Mike Maloney said. A 54-year-old member of Kiefer’s hunting party shot him when the man’s rifle got caught in brush and discharged, said Tim Lawhern, hunter safety coordinator for the state Department of Natural Resources. The bullet entered Kiefer’s right shoulder and went out his left side, Lawhern said. Kiefer’s death was the second hunting fatality this year in Wisconsin. A 63-year-old man fatally shot his grandson in Waushara County on Sunday when he mistook the teenager for a deer. Two other hunters have been wounded in accidents since Monday, Lawhern said. The deer hunt continues through Sunday. Last year’s season had 10 shooting accidents, with one hunter killed during a deer drive on the final weekend, the DNR said. The only season without shooting fatalities occurred in 1973, Lawhern said. The most dangerous hunting season in recent times was 1987, when eight hunters died in 53 shooting-related accidents. |
