ODC readies for move to new facility

NORMAL -- Employees and clients of the Occupational Development Center are excited and nervous about the agency’s move this weekend to a larger facility.

“We’re really excited and proud to be going to a better place,” said Steve Dorsey, the ODC janitorial services manager who is overseeing the move. “It’s lifting everyone’s spirits.”

ODC, which provides employment and training for 784 people with disabilities, is moving its production services and warehouse from the former Eureka Co. building, 1201 E. Bell St., Bloomington, to the former outlet mall, now called Crossroads Center, 310 Wylie Drive, Normal.

ODC’s last day on Bell Street will be Friday and its first day at Crossroads Center will be Monday, said Matt Jackson, who is ODC president and chief executive officer.

ODC, which has 84 employees, needs more space than it has at the 32,000-square-foot Eureka building. The number of employees and clients is on the rise, Jackson said.

The 76,000-square-foot Crossroads Center building — which once housed a Nike store — can be renovated into a production facility, warehouse space, training areas and a conference room. ODC bought the building, and a 3.1 acre lot to the west, for $2.7 million.

ODC plans to use 50,000 square feet. Two existing tenants —AFNI and Big Money Bingo — will continue to use the remaining 26,000 square feet.

Among ODC improvements at its new location are making it handicap-accessible, building two tornado shelters for clients and employees, and adding a truck dock and ramp.

“Our clients are excited and a little bit nervous about the unknown,” Dorsey said. “But they’ll be happy out here.”

Clients have told the Pantagraph that they like the new building but are concerned about public transportation. Jackson said a special services bus will stop at ODC’s new front door but that the fixed route bus will stop on Wylie Drive a block away. Jackson hopes that the fixed bus route eventually will be adjusted to stop in front of the new ODC building.

" Yes, Occupational Development Center does rely on donations and funding from other organizations and individuals, as well as private contracts that support work they do. The leadership within this organization work hard at doing what they must do, to support their clients in every way possible. Congratulation ODC and thank you for being who you are in our community. Good luck and success in your new location! "

" Is the only concern you have where the money comes from? The clients at ODC work hard and maybe people should "do their homework" and research before making such comments. United Way Agencies are here to help the less fortunate. ODC staff works hard for their clients and the clients themselves work hard. There are people who do not have disabilities that should "job shadow" the clients and see what it means to be a dedicated, hard worker!! I am a bit familiar with ODC and who they are and what they stand for. The clients are ODC's number one concern. ODC does rely on donation and funding but they also have contract sites that attriubute to their growth as well. ODC staff must have worked hard to get to this point - CONGRATULATIONS!!!!! Enjoy the new building! "

" ODC staff must have worked really hard to make this happen. Not-for-profits don't have $$$ lying around waiting to be spent. It takes a lot of committment from the employees at ODC to recognize that the location they are in is not working for them. They provide a service to the community that is unmatched and they are always looking for ways to do more. YOU GO ODC!!! "

" This is a non for profit organization. They rely on donations and funding from other organizations as well as private contract work that they do within the facility. They deserve this. The funding for the disabled is getting cut regularly. I am happy they have a bigger facility! "

" I don't see why the fixed bus route cannot be adjusted one block right away...how long does it take to go around the block? The ODC provides a place for people with disabilities a chance to feel productive and useful. I hope everything goes well. "

" Congratulations! I've been reading the paper everyday anxiously waiting for the move. I hope the new building is as great as it deserves to be...as fantastic as it should for the consumers and the community. Best of luck from here in Tucson! "
