Stockton hasn't ruled out 2nd run; Renner may try

BLOOMINGTON -- Bloomington Mayor Steve Stockton has not decided against running for a second term, but already several possible candidates are coming forward including McLean County Board member Tari Renner.

Stockton said the factors for his decision included his health, when his wife, Linda, will decide to retire from her job at State Farm Insurance Cos., and what he thinks he can accomplish in his second term.

“The decision has not been made, yet,” said Stockton who retired from State Farm and ran for mayor in 2005 unopposed.

He scoffed at the rumors that he and his wife will move to Arizona at the end of his current term. “That’s just not true,” he added.

During Monday’s City Council meeting, Stockton joked that he wish the person spreading the rumor would tell him where the home he is allegedly building or buying is so he can be sure to get the property deed.

In addition to Renner considering running, Aldermen Jim Fruin and Steven Purcell said their decisions will depend heavily on Stockton’s decision.

The field of candidates may also include Mike Sprague, a former alderman who briefly considered a bid for mayor in 2005.

Renner said he likely will make his decision after the first of the year. Renner, the chairman of Illinois Wesleyan University’s political science department, has served three terms on the county board and ran in 2004 as a Democrat against U.S. Rep. Jerry Weller, R-Morris.

Renner did not back away from the idea the current direction of the City Council has led to the early discussion of who will run for mayor.

“I was approached about a month and a half ago to run for mayor by people who are concerned about the direction of the city,” Renner said. “The decision making of the mayor and council is not as functional as it should be.”

Voters won’t cast their ballot for mayor until April 7, 2009. Announcements about who is running for mayor are not expected until spring or summer of 2008.

Fruin, who works in human resources at State Farm, rejoined the council in May to represent Ward 9 for a two-year term. He resigned his seat as alderman for Ward 3 in 2003. He was first elected to the council in 1995.

“I don’t think I would choose to run against Steve,” Fruin said. “But now having said that, yes, it is something I’ve considered.”

Purcell, who works at Mitsubishi Motors of North America, represents Ward 7. He is in his first term as alderman.

“Until Steve Stockton decides, I am not going to comment,” Purcell said.

Sprague had little to say about a possible run for mayor but confirmed he was thinking about it.

“I do have a group that’s been meeting,” he added.

Sprague, a State Farm agent, served on the council for 11 years representing Ward 8 before he resigned in March 2006 because he moved his family to a house in Ward 4. He considered running against Stockton in 2005 but did not.

Ward 8 Alderman John Hanson agreed with Renner there is some dysfunction to the council but he is not interested in being mayor.

“Never say never, but as of now I don’t think I can commit the time for it,” Hanson added.

In addition to Hanson, other aldermen saying “no” to a run for mayor include David Sage who represents Ward 2, Judy Stearns, Ward 4; Jim Finnegan, Ward 5 and Karen Schmidt, Ward 6.

Ward 1 Alderman Allen Gibson said it is unlikely he will run for mayor considering the field of candidates already taking shape. “If there is no one I am willing to support, I would run,” he added. Gibson lost the 2001 race for mayor to former Mayor Judy Markowitz.

Ward 3 Alderman Kevin Huette would not comment on whether he is considering entering the race and would only say: “Anyone considering running for mayor, I would tell them to go for it.”

" we need to change them all out and start over. The next ones can't be as lost as this bunch are. This town is all about MONEY and how much more they can squeeze out of us. Maybe one of these days they figure out what to do with the dinosaur on the corner. I saw where Peoria and others have had some really good shows so tell me why this place can't either? Someone needs to contact Peoria and ask how it's done; I know you'll look stupid for asking, but you already do so what's the difference??? So instead you try to take everyone for all you can take. " What kind of smart mouth reply is that. The original poster has a valid point. While politician's don't create jobs it's the community they build and lead that brings jobs and industries to the area. I have to agree too this area's growth is nil when it comes to quality jobs that pay. Not everyone can work for some of the few employers here. Relying on just a few major employers doesn't make the best economic sense. I don't see why people have to leave but many do because of no jobs here. "

" The bottom line is that Mayor Stockton has not provided a vision for Bloomington. I contrast his performance with that of Mayor Koos; whether you agree with his decisions or not Mayor Koos has a vision for his community and a plan to make it happen. Mayor Stockton seems to be floundering and it's not only because of the coliseum. I don't believe Stockton possesses the leadership we need. "

" Yes they all need to go, but jeez haven't we learned yet to not put State Farm in charge of our town. don't they run enough of what goes on around here. I am sick of self serving city governments that never held accountable. Do we forget so soon what Stockton has done? "

" I just hope that Steve Purcell runs so I can campaign against a person that really thinks his doodoo doesn't stink. He walks around places acting like he is really smart and knows something, but in all reality he is just a wannabee, he might know and crunch numbers and work for THE FARM, but that is what happened to this town when intellects like him took over, see Stockton...most of the people in Bloomington and Normal are hard working, good hearted, and middle class citizens trying to make ends meet and enjoy life to the best of their ability... we need good hearted, hard working, middle class people running our government, not elitist "

" Former Alderman Skip Crawford would be a good choice. He is the only person on the City Council that never once voted to spend a penny on the Arena. No other past or current Alderperson can make that statement. He was verbally opposed to the Arena from day one, because he listened. That in itself should tell you what kind of represenative he was for 10 years. As a life long Bloomington resident, I'd love to know why Dan Brady Ram rodded his questionable opponet for the City Council seat? What was that all about DB? "

" It doesnt matter who the mayor is or if we even have a mayor in Bloomington. This city uses the city manager form of government and until that changes, the mayors job is just that of a ribbon cutter and a cheerleader. If Bloomington residents want change and responsive government, then they need to demand a switch to and ELECTED mayor/council form of government, wherein the mayor has the power to hire/fire department heads etc. "

Chicken wrote on Nov 28, 2007 5:57 AM:

" Sounds like King Stockton may not want to actually "run" against an opponent. It's pretty easy to win when nobody runs against you, isn't it? What's the matter SF Steve, afraid to stand on your record as mayor? "

Matty Groves wrote on Nov 28, 2007 5:45 AM:

" Calling this Mayor and Council dysfunctional is accurate. Attend a few meetings and see for yourselves. As Stockton says himself, nobody reports to him, and he seems incapable of leading this Council in any given direction. He's been in office 2 years and he as yet has never clearly stated a vision for the City. "

Happy that they're looking at tough issues wrote on Nov 28, 2007 5:13 AM:

" I really like the idea that the city council is taking the time to look for savings in the budget. I know that Hanson thinks that the city should just raise taxes to cover the arena debt, but it's a good idea to take some time to look for cuts in the city budget first. How long has it been since this was done? I know that there will always be push-back from the city's department heads and some alderman against budget cuts, but this really needs to be done from time to time and I'm pleased that the mayor and alderman (well, most of them) are finally doing this, even though there may be some unpleasant moments. We should expect no less from our elected officials. "

Re: Sprague (the father of the arena) wrote on Nov 28, 2007 4:35 AM:

" That's a joke. There's no way that Sprague could be elected again after the voters threw out all of his fellow arena supporters. If Mayor Judy was the mother of the arena idea, Alderman Sprague was the FATHER. He was the biggest pusher on the city council for the thing and insisted that it would make money for the city (yeah, right). Ask people in his old ward about him listening, he would only listen to you if you had money or influence. And he DID NOT LISTEN to voters because how people voted on the arena referendum meant nothing to him, and he acted on that when he helped push the arena through. He always said he liked hockey when he lived in Minnesota. "

" Now the city can go farther down im the sewer. If the mayor would run again I hope that during his second term he will do something about his department heads. They all need to go, give the citizens of Bloomington a fresh start with department leaders that are not out just for themselves but to help the city. POLICE and FIRE are the two departments that this needs to happen to the MOST. And DO NOT FORGET THE CITY MANAGER and the HEAD OF H.R. also!!! Just a thought for you to ponder over if you run again "

Sprague wrote on Nov 27, 2007 7:33 PM:

" If he runs, this is the only choice. Here's a guy who actually listens to what people say AND isn't afraid to speak his mind. We lost a lot when he had to step down from his council seat. We could gain a lot with him as mayor. "

No Jobs here wrote on Nov 27, 2007 6:49 PM:

" I think that it's time we get someone in there not from the State Farm family and start working on bringing new and better paying employers to the community. I'd welcome any company to compete with State Farm for jobs. This community is so stagnant and offers no growth in the number of job opportunities. Please none of this bs about the number of low paying service jobs thank you! Criminey has anyone looked at the number of help wanted ads in the Pantagraph lately. What were there 10 listed today. How pathetic! "

" Gibson will have a hard time being elected to a second term in Ward #1. There are many voters he has turned his back on after being elected. These people will find a new Alderman canidate for this Ward who is interested in helping citizens with real problems. "
