CHICAGO -- Sheriff Thomas Dart says a correctional officer who worked at the Cook County Jail faces bribery and official misconduct charges after allegedly taking more than $20,000 in kickbacks from a jail vendor.

Dart says 39-year-old James Kelly is a 14-year veteran. He supervised employees and inmates who prepared meals inside the jail’s two kitchens.

Between November 2005 and August 2006, Kelly allegedly asked for bribes on six separate occasions from an outside contractor doing kitchen repair work. Dart says the contractor is cooperating with the investigation.

Dart says Kelly resigned after being de-deputized last week. He is being held in sheriff’s police custody pending a bond hearing Wednesday.

It isn’t immediately clear if Kelly has an attorney.
