Ex-teacher could go to trial in 2 different sex cases
BLOOMINGTON -- A former Unit 5 elementary school teacher accused of molesting 11 students in McLean and Champaign counties may go to trial early next year in both criminal cases.
Jon White, 26, was in Bloomington for a hearing Wednesday on the McLean County accusations that he sexually molested two girls while he was a teacher at Colene Hoose Elementary School, Normal, during the 2004-05 school year.
Defense lawyer Brett Olmstead said after the hearing that White could go to trial as early as February in the Champaign County case. The McLean County trial could follow soon after, he said.
Olmstead and Carol Dison are White’s defense lawyers.
A hearing is scheduled for Thursday in Urbana on a defense motion to move that trial outside Champaign County. Macon County is a possible site for the trial, said Olmstead.
The trial is expected to last at least three weeks and may begin with individual questioning of potential jurors.
White is charged with molesting nine students at the Thomas Paine Elementary School in Urbana.
White was granted permission Wednesday to attend three family functions over the holidays with his nephews. Judge Scott Drazewski approved the agreement between the defense and prosecutors to allow the supervised contact.
The former teacher has supervised visits with his young daughter but a condition of his bond does not allow contact with other minors.
White is scheduled back in McLean County court on Jan. 23.
