‘Dead Man Walking’ author plans visit

EUREKA — Sister Helen Prejean, whose book “Dead Man Walking” was the basis for the Oscar-winning film of the same name, will speak about death penalty issues next month at Eureka College.

Prejean’s talk, “Dead Man Walking: The Journey Continues,” is at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 22 in the Cerf Center.

The author’s 1993 New York Times bestseller, which detailed her experience as the spiritual adviser to a death row inmate, earned a Pulitzer Prize nomination.

Three years later, Susan Sarandon won a best actress award for her portrayal of the Roman Catholic nun and death penalty critic.

At Eureka, Prejean will talk about her work against the death penalty and her support for families of murder victims and inmates on death row.

Cost is $5. For tickets, call (309) 467-6420.
