Customers like to hear music at post office
Advertisement

My husband and I were standing in line in the Eagle post office station when suddenly we noticed that there was no music playing.

Apparently the district office sent out a memo stating that no music may be played by the staff.

Really?

What about the customers in Wal-Mart, Kmart, Target, the malls, grocery stores etc?

Do they offend anyone?

Does anyone complain?

Of course not!

We asked some of the people behind us in line how they felt about the lack of music. They all said they enjoyed the music and really missed it.

We all agreed that we need to listen to something pleasant when we are standing in line. The wait can be considerable at times because although the clerks are extremely hard working and very nice, there are often not enough of them compared to the amount of customers.

We are at the post office fairly frequently and will really enjoy hearing the music played again. We find it very soothing - as I am sure the postal workers do too. It also helps to ``muffle'' the voices in adjacent cubicles.

Anyone who reads this and agrees with my husband and me should contact the Bloomington postmaster.

" your right to listen to music ends where my ears begin. if you are so addicted to constant music in the background (as if you were in a movie or something) get your self an ipod or a cd player with headset. sheesh! its a no-brainer, you then get to listen to your music, and I get to listen to quiet. " Gillian...interesting comment. It never ceases to amaze me how many people think that everyone has a computer. We love all of our customers at our office...old, young, rich or poor. However, we cater to the lower middle class and middle class for the most part. They are at our post office to pay their utility bills and are praying that it arrives on time. They don't have computers, IPODS, cell phones or DSL or HBO. Some don't even have checking accounts and have to buy money orders to pay their bills. They are just trying to feed their kids and pay for the essentials. Wake up and smell the coffee, Gillian and be thankful for your online life. "

" Strange, How come I have good rapport with the some of the clerks in Normal, Downtown Bloomington and the Eagle station? I have also been friends with postal people I met in Post Offices in Decatur and in Chicago. People are people, some are easy, some less so, to know and like. Just like the folks who are in line. Heavy public contact jobs are stressful by nature. Try to bear that in mind and see what a change in YOUR attitude does to change THEIRS. "

" So a place doesn't play Christmas music? Big deal. Maybe the employees are glad that the Post Office doesn't play the music. After the 10-12 hour shifts, hearing the same songs over and over again in various genres of music can get aggravating. I celebrate Christmas, but I don't want to hear Christmas music everywhere I go (much less the bell ringers, either). "

" Do you know that there is really no reason to have to go to the post office. You can buy anything you need online from USPS.com...including postage for shipping packages and then you just schedule a free pickup at your front door. Have done it many, many times. Sit the box outside the front door in the morning and it gets picked up when they deliver the mail. Simple. "

" really need music is the drivers bureau. Maybe it would cheer them up; they are always grouchy. They are the rudest bunch of people I have ever met. Do they specialize in classes teaching them how to be rude and grouchy to people? I had one woman one day and she was so crabby and wouldn't even respond to my pleasant comments. I just looked at her when I was ready to leave and asked her, "do you ever smile?" Still no response. Best response to tell these grouches (any place) is "if you had a personality you wouldn't know what to do with it!" "

" Nice try Gillian. I applaud your efforts. The plain and simple facts are that the postal clerks have listened to music for many years with absolutely no complaints. For whatever reason, the people in charge decided to change that. It's their way of making sure the clerks feel disheartened and defeated before they begin those 10 and 12 hour Christmas shifts with never ending lines of customers out of the doors. Autocratic employers are like that. Tomorrow they will give them a scrambled egg to let them know how much they appreciate them though. "

While the twin towers were burning and people were jumping from the buildings and hitting the ground below, the music system was still going in the plaza between the towers. A very eerie scene. Of course, my twisted mind now imagines a postal worker spraying the post office with bullets while the music plays. "

" is going to pick out the music? This is a U.S. Govt. facility. The other places you mention are private businesses, if you don't like their music you can jus quit going there. However, we all need to use the post office. If you had turned to me in line and asked me if I wanted to listen to music, I too would have said yes. However I would have chosen the Stones "Let it Bleed" or Led Zep's "Gallow's Pole". While someone else might prefer "Moon River" by Johnny Mercer and Henry Mancini and sung by Andy Williams. It would be even tougher at Christmastime. All religions (and rightfully so) would want their music played. My suggestion Gillian, If you want music while in line at the Post Office. Sing. I don't think you'll bother the other customers more than you already have. "
