Normal power outage over, failed equipment blamed
Advertisement

NORMAL — About 5,100 homes and businesses lost power for a little less than an hour earlier this afternoon.

Ameren spokeswoman Natalie Hemmer said a piece of safety equipment called a lightning arrester failed about 2:25 p.m., and all power was restored by 3:20 p.m.

She said the equipment can be weakened when struck by lightning and fail at a later date.

" Get used to it folks! Wind energy is the most unstable - when dumped upon our grid, it is going to cause massive brownouts and blackouts. That's why it needs an equal amount of traditional power to back it up. Therefore, wind power is unable to power a SINGLE home without traditional backup. It is why we've been paying outrageous increases on our power bills since January. We are paying for the upgrades to the grid. The Governor forced the utilities to accept this totally unreliable pie-in-the-sky source of power, the utilities are passing the costs on to us. We will suffer with the skyrocketing rates and with the power outages and instability to the grid. "

" You obviously do not work at home. You are thinking about your own little world and not anyone else. Senior citizens and people that rely on power to keep their sump pumps pumping and have to spend money they cannot afford to spend on back-up battery sump pump systems and power back-up. I have a relative that had to install a back-up generator for 5,000.00 because of the power outages. They have needed it twice this summer. When the power goes out so do computers, internet, medical devices, heating etc. Many rely on these for home based businesses not too mention the commercial businesse that loose customers. I had to replace 6 surge protectors twice in the last year because of power surges and outages. At 60.00 a pop for good protectors that is money I should not have to spend. On top of the rate increase that is increasing again after the dog and pony show rebates sent out, we have to spend money to prepare for these outages. Before you label everyone whiners think before you speak, novel idea isn't it. "

" Normal is the worst place to live and I look forward to moving .That is the one thing I will remember about living here, the power outages.I mean it seems like every time you turn around the power goes out, good weather, bad weather .That is the one thing I can depend on is the power going out.Thank God for generators.Thank you Ameren for the rate increases. You can take your rate increases and %$#$&&%$#@#. " Lightning arrestors are designed to fail so that Ameren has an outage of hours as opposed to days to rebuild the line. "

Pay more get less wrote on Nov 28, 2007 8:46 PM:

" The first 10 years we had power problems may 3 times for short periods. The last year and a half we have lost power 5 times with one lasting 9 hours last winter. pay more get less. A lineman that stopped to check our green box said there is a problem somewhere underground but they are not sure where. so we will continue to have problems till something serious happens I guess. I did not agree with the rate freeze for ten years, but I do not like that the extra profits are going to go to stock holders instead of into the infrastructure. "

did anyone bother... wrote on Nov 28, 2007 7:39 PM:

" Does anyone bother inspecting the lightning arresters after a strong thunderstorm? I would think that any lightning strikes on equipment could be detected. I guess the increase in Ameren rates was not spent on preventive maintenance. With winter almost upon us this story does not bode well. Let's hope we have a mild winter... "

" This doesn't answer your question. I have no idea why the power went out yesterday. But I know someone that lives over there, and did lose power yesterday, but they have Cornbelt not Ameren. So i guess it's not just Ameren having electrical problems. "

What's Up wrote on Nov 28, 2007 4:32 PM:

" This happened yesterday too, but it wasn't in the paper. There was an outage that seemed to cover the south and southwestern end of Veteran's and stretched to the entire southwestern edge of town. It was sudden and lasted 20-25 minutes. Does anybody know what happened? "

Outage Maps wrote on Nov 28, 2007 4:19 PM:

" Most electrical utilities still rely upon the old school method of determining the point of an outage by pulling out a map with the location of called outages till the outage can be triangulated. Companies like ComEd have spent millions upgrading their infastructure so that this can interface with their SCADA system and determine the outage online quicker. "

" Typical Ameren. "We don't know anything." They will then make up an estimated time that service will be restored, then revise it 20 times when they fail to meet any of the previous deadlines. The WORST ever. "
