PONTIAC -- A Pontiac man has been charged with attempted first-degree murder after police said he stabbed a 36-year-old woman whom he had been dating.

The woman was still in critical condition Wednesday morning, a nursing supervisor said.

D’Arious Bowens, 24, called 911 and turned himself in after the incident Sunday night in an apartment at Meadowview Court, 903 W. North St., Livingston County First Assistant State’s Attorney Carey Luckman said.

Pontiac police initially were dispatched at 8:45 p.m. when a resident had heard noises from an adjacent apartment, then the woman showed up on the neighbor’s doorstep and asked for help. The woman identified her attacker as Bowens, Luckman said.

The woman was later taken to OSF St. James–John W. Albrecht Medical Center, Pontiac, with multiple stab wounds to the front and back of her torso and her arms, authorities said. She later was transferred to OSF Saint Francis Medical Center, Peoria, where she was remained listed in critical condition.

Bowens was charged Tuesday with attempted first-degree murder, a Class X felony; aggravated domestic battery, a Class 2 felony; and two counts of aggravated battery, a Class 3 felony.

He remained at the Livingston County jail in lieu of posting $200,000.

Bowens’ mother, Thelma Bowens, and the victim’s family attended the hearing Tuesday. Bowens’ mother, Thelma Bowens, said she was sorry for what has happened and expressed hope for the woman’s recovery.

“I just know that I have a good son,” she said. “My prayers go out to her and her family and I want everyone to know that there are no harsh feelings between the families. There is just nothing that we can do now. We can’t change things.”

Thelma Bowens hugged the victim’s family members afterwards, but they declined to comment after the hearing.

" If you truly are caring let us consider compassion for the victim and her family first and then confusion for the Bowens. After all I can not think of one single reason why a person would stab someone else so many times. So if there is little compassion for Bowens, don't be surprised. This poor victim and her family are the ones who deserve compassion in this matter exclusively. "

" But it would be ok if the situation was reversed? Grow up, this has nothing to do with age, but attempted murder. "

" Everyone needs to think twice before making comments against a family you know NOTHING about. Have some compassion for the Bowen's family-as well as the victim's family. "

" Thelma also always blamed the school district when her good son was involved in trouble. Eventually the excuses need to end. I wonder if anyone might think Thelma failed as a parent? "
