Trucks get red light on speeding up

SPRINGFIELD — A House panel said Wednesday that Illinois’ interstates are safer with semi-trucks driving slower than the pace of smaller vehicles. In fact, they said it twice.

If either of the two nearly identical pieces of legislation one proposed by state Rep. David Reis, R-Willow Hill, the other by state Rep. Jil Tracy, R-Mount Sterling — had been approved in committee, the legislature could have found itself voting on raising the interstate speed limit for trucks for the fourth time in recent years.

However, both proposals were rejected by the House Driver’s Education Committee on 6-5 votes. The only difference between the two proposals were the words used to exclude Chicago and its surrounding suburbs from the speed change.

Both pieces of legislation were guided by the premise that rural interstate highways are safer if semi-trucks travel at a rate closer to those of the cars and SUVs on the road.

“We felt like if everyone were going the same speed, there’s less chance for interaction,” said Mike Hart, associate director for Mid-West Truckers Association.

Currently, the speed limit for cars on rural Illinois interstates is 65 mph and 55 mph for trucks. Legislation to raise the limit for trucks up to 65 mph has been vetoed by Gov. Rod Blagojevich three times.

“We decided to come back this year with a compromise bill to raise the speed limit on interstates to 60 mph; we’re giving five mph, the opponents are giving five mph,” Reis said. “It’ll close the gap towards bringing uniform speed limits to our interstates; truck drivers call (Illinois) a speed bump.”

Committee chairman John D’Amico, D-Chicago, a one-time advocate for increasing the speed limit for trucks to 65 mph, voted “no” on both proposals. D’Amico said roads are safer without trucks traveling any faster, and “trucking companies aren’t taking a loss because of the speed. They’re doing pretty well.”

State Reps. Mike Boland, D-East Moline and Reis voted “yes” on both bills. State Rep. Dan Brady, R-Bloomington, voted “no” on both.

" To To YO

You might "pass them all the time on those highways," but that is not proof that they are going 55 mph. Face it, those trucks already are disobeying the speed limit and if we raise it for them they'll disobey that limit as well. "

" One simple question - when was the last time you drove on Interstate 55, 74, 70, 64, 80, 90, 94, 355, etc and passed a truck? One simple answer - never. I have never seen them slow down to 55 even when a patrol car is near by. I guess I just don't get it. "

" So according to your logic trucks should drive 15 times slower than cars since they weigh a lot more and take a longer distance to stop?? How about this as some logic - If all vehicles are traveling at a more uniform speed, traffic safety will be increased. Relatively uniform speeds would mean less lane changes, less choke/congestion points, and probably less frustration for those that currently "have" to drive slower. I've taken physics, maybe you should take common sense. "

" this correct. A car weighs about 5,000 pounds. A fully loaded semi weighs about 75,000 pounds yet some of you think it would be safer to have the larger vehicle traveling the same speed. Does stopping distance mean anything to you? Semi's already drive 65 this just gives them license to go 75. How absurd the posters are here. Take a physics class, learn something, then post. This is another example of a powerful lobby getting their way at the expense of the public. BTW there is no way trucks get better mileage going faster...don't be absurd. "

I can't drive 55 wrote on Feb 27, 2008 10:28 PM:

" All the truckers know that they can get away doing 62 or more so if its 65 they will do 72 or more. In fact I drove From Ocean View Delaware to bloomington in my car with the cruise on 80 the whole way and was still getting passed by cars, trucks and police (No Semi's though) and never got stopped. So it all depends on the cop you get and if he really wants to bother pulling you over or not. And before you get all wound up I do have a Class A CDL with a N endorsement and if you don't know what that means, It means I can drive a Semi with a tanker trailer. "

" This is an other example of the ignorance in Springfield. Not only would allowing trucks to go the same speed as auto make our highways safer, it would also clean our air. Cars constantly having to speed up and slow down to get around a big truck is not only dwindling the oil supply it also is creating more smog and pollution. Big trucks get better fuel mileage at 65 than they do at 55 to. But the real reason why this did not go through is because the state boys would be busting all the speeding 4 wheelers as they would be easier to pick out.. It would just make their jobs to easy to catch all of you... "
