Police: 2 boys hit unsuspecting woman in the face with a pie
Advertisement

NORMAL -- Police are looking for two teenage boys who hit an unsuspecting woman in the face with a pie when she opened her front door.

The woman told police she answered her door about 4:45 p.m. Monday in the 2800 block of Greyhawk Drive, a Normal police report said.

A boy asked her if she was familiar with the mathematical term “pi,” and then hit her in the face with a pie, police said. The other boy used a video camera to record the assault, police said.

Police believe the victim, who did not know the pair, was selected at random.

Greyhawk Drive is in Eagles Landing subdivision in northeast Normal.

" First of all This is a truly funny story. Not many teenagers are creative enough to think of this kind of prank. And chances are, the teenagers didn't even know the woman they did this to, so it's not like they did it to hurt her feelings or hurt her. No one was hurt, and while looking for who did this might set an example, nothing really is accomplished. The B-N police deparment is wasting their money on this one. Second, people leaving comments on here seem to care more about making personal jabs at each other's comments than the actual story. Who has time for that? I know i don't, I'm too busy eating pie. "

First, I am sorry about the "medication" comment and I take back the "tin-foil" reference...That was out of line. Now, to business...You accuse me of taking your knee-jerk, incendiary comments out of context, then in the same posting you erroneously encapsulate your opinion of my thoughts in a three word "Discussion thread"!?!? Pot calling kettle black, eh?

My "THREAD" is not, "pie-in-face = Funny no matter what the context". My Point is that a lot of people (you included) are making a much bigger deal out of this than is reasonable. You have taken this prank and injected words like Abuse, Assault, dangerous, harrassment, victim, attack, and rage. And, out of context or not, you suggested that this type of behavior augers towards the downfall of our society and its "decent" mores....Can you, at any level, acquiesce that you MAY be going a little hard on these KIDS? I think fundamentally you and I agree that these kids should be punished. I think we differ GREATLY on the severity of that punishment. "

I gather the "pro's" here are either NOT reading all of the posts (except when they want to REWRITE them to suit) or are stuck on a groove that refuses to see we are NOT saying this wasn't a funny prank: we are saying it bordered on criminal because it was done to a perfect STRANGER, violating their right to privacy AND potentially causing injury. You DO NOT KNOW who is on the other side of the "door". Even door-to-door salespeople know the reaction they receive after knocking is unpredictable.
What if the person answering the door was a recent survivor of a mugging, rape or attempted murder? A joke is only funny if all parties involved KNOW a joke is going on, or they know each other well enough to "handle" the surprise/punch line.

I am not paranoid, psychotic, grumpy or old. I am not on "medication" or any other rude insult the haters here are putting forth. Again, I have been able to debate and discuss without ONCE being mean, derogatory or insulting. Those who think doing so makes them look anything but immature should be ashamed.

As lindini put it: "Pie is funny, a paid actor getting hit with pie is funny, even some friends you know well, maybe is funny but to attack a stranger when you have no idea about them or their circumstance is NOT funny, it is assault."

My comment about the decline of civilization: "There is no longer hope for civilization the day everyone DOES agree it's "all in good fun" to enjoy a perfect stranger's distress. Worse, that you EXPECT the injured party to LAUGH, with you."

Your common thread is: "pie is funny". WE AGREE.
Mine (and others) common thread is: "but within LIMITS" (family, friend, etc.). Obviously this is where we DISAGREE.

Pranks are only funny to the pranksters and no one has the right to attack someone else. The world lacks empathy, the number one problem with EVERONE today. Pie is funny, a paid actor getting hit with pie is funny, even some friends you know well, maybe is funny but to attack a stranger when you have no idea about them or their circumstance is NOT funny, it is assault. Therefore, I propose that all pies now be added to the list of controlled substances. This world is too fragile for marijuana, salvia, flavored cigarettes, and the now infamous 'pi.' The DEA and ATF need to conduct mass raids against bakeries to confiscate these weapons of mass destruction and throw the criminal pie manufacturers in prison where they belong! "

Using words like that to describe this article gives me a second laugh.

Oh, and Cocoa, if there's a “Lazy, Loser, Crazy” generation out there, it's the one that burned their draft cards, spit on American soldiers, and ran around at Woodstock in drugged up orgies. " I don't know why some of us can see the wrong in this so clearly, while others are still missing the details that place this incident just OUTSIDE of the context of "harmless" humor...
If a ten year old pulls the hair of the little girl in front of him at the local ice cream shop, and howls with glee at her distress and tears, IF you were his parents and witnessed this, would you tell him to stop and apologize at once to her (and HER shocked parents!), or would you LAUGH uproariously and tell them "oh, kids will be kids, won't they?".
Further, if they TOLD you they were shocked, would you continue to LAUGH at them and remark that they "have no sense of humor"??
If you answered 'yes', to the above scenario, then you either are not a parent yourself, or shouldn't be.
This has been a terribly eye-opening discussion...

There is no longer hope for civilization the day everyone DOES agree it's "all in good fun" to enjoy a perfect stranger's distress. Worse, that you EXPECT the injured party to LAUGH, with you. "

It was wrong, disrespectful and cruel. It crossed the lines of a practical joke when they played it on a stranger. Had this been one of thier friends or a friends parent, thats funny stuff. But it wasn't. They will learn quickly what facing the consequences really means. I hope it teaches them forethought and accountability. I personally know them and this sickens me that they did this thinking it was ok. So, all you little highschool buddies of thiers, get over it, it was wrong and your parents would kill you if you had done this. I know mine would have. So its not funny, and no they shouldn't be punished to the full extent of the law. They should have enough consequences to put these good model teenagers back on the right track. They are good boys from good families that were raised with proper morals. "

" oh, and to BeeBee : Hmmm. How would YOU know this (that the kids would have changed their mind about pie'ing the door-answerer, had it been a frail elderly person.)??
If they were foolish enough to be recording a prank that they HAD TO KNOW was going to startle the living daylights out of their victim (see, there's the linchpin of the whole thing: it's CRUEL to do something to someone if you KNOW beforehand they WILL NOT like it!), it's pretty certain they would have followed through.
See, I could be at a stoplight, on a warm summer day with windows down, and if two teens I didn't know ran up to my car (with water balloons behind their backs), I might have a heart attack (thinking I'm about to be car-jacked or shot or both) BEFORE that soft water-filled projectile hits me. And I'm supposed to LAUGH?? Some of you just DON'T GET IT...
Times are DANGEROUS thesedays, and thinking the kids walking up to you on the street are going to help you cross it CAN be the WORST judgement you make. People have been KILLED falling for less than what SEEMS harmless... "

" Many of us learned as children to RESPECT certain "rules of engagement", if you will, in social interaction...
Now, if your parents didn't teach you this, you might consider UNDERSTANDING why this prank was dangerous for BOTH PARTIES: if the boys had pie'd (or pi'd, I GET the joke) their MOM, or AUNT, or friend, it would have been a good laugh! They did not, though; they went to the door of a complete stranger, not knowing how COMPLEX a possible reaction might result.

Others have brought up some of those POTENTIAL RISKS (they were NOT "threatening" or exhibiting "rage", but suggesting the "what-ifs"!), and if anyone thought long and hard enough, they'd realize they, too, would NOT want THEIR boys on the porch of someone who might be a big, mean mudda that just might "bring them in for a talk". There's some scary people "out there". And kids/teens face too many dangers these days as it is, without pranking the wrong door and regretting (if they make it away from the possible Dammer's and Gacy's) that decision to "pick a door, pick ANY door". OH! Wait, you think I have "anger issues" because I think children/teens going to a STRANGER'S door (oops, those emphasising caps again!) and chucking a pie in their face is NOT a "harmless, funny prank" but a random ATTACK that could have tragic consequences for either the pie-throwers OR the pie-ee? Just because I dn't AGREE with the yukkers does NOT mean I'm "angry". It means I'm looking at the "what-ifs" a little more closely than they are. And I'm raising my children to be absolutely "over-aware" of how their actions impact others. The most dangerous difference between "now" and "back then" is that youth today have completely lost respect for not only their own parents, but for other ADULTS in general! Respect starts AT HOME. I guess they could have just gotten lucky, but if I were going to play a prank like that, I would make sure that no one/thing could come out after me!!

Personally, I don't open my door unless I know the person standing outside. That my sound stupid, but I don't really care. I don't have to talk to anyone I don't want to while I'm inside my house! "

What I am saying is that this is not that big of a deal. Wrong, sure. CRIMINAL...come on. Some people are crying, "ASSAULT" and calling for the police to arrest and punish these KIDS... Maybe the example I used was over the top, I'll acquiesce to that. When I was a kid I threw a rock at a neighbor's house and broke a window. No one called the cops or sued my family. My folks cut a check and I had to work off the $$ for the new window by doing yard work at the house where I broke the window. I think that was a better lesson than getting a destruction of private property charge and serving time....try this...read 'ZEVA's' posting to this article, then read the very next one by 'jipsi'. Sure, I woulda been mad, probably would have been chasing them down the street with my belt, but call the police!? Pshhhh, give me a break. If you people never pulled pranks like this when you were kids then you must have had some sad childhoods. Maybe that's why you're all so bitter and irrational. This is one of the oldest pranks in the books, you guys act like it's teenage terrorism. Grow up. "

Then we would have a story on another pitbull mauling and everyone would be up in arms.

Kids should be carefull with pranks. If you dont know the person, you dont know the reaction, or who is there defending them. "

Now granted, I work with teenagers and actually enjoy it (in fact I live for it), while most adults are horrified at the idea of doing what I do, so maybe you have to have the right mentality. I will grant that if you're going to do something like that, you should probably know the person you're doing it to. But good grief, people get robbed and vandalized, and people are worrying about pie. I also think that for something to be considered "assault" it should be painful (and with malicious intent). I don't know in this case. It depends on how hard they pied her. By the way, what flavor was it anyway? "

PRIORITIES, anyone? or is everyone too busy living in our culture of fear and waiting for the opportunity to vent about the next personal outrage to actually care about the things that MATTER? "

HRPuffinstuff wrote on Mar 12, 2008 10:33 AM:

" Actually, Jipsi is right. Tickling can be a form of abuse if the person begs for it to stop and they have tears running down their face and they're peeing their pants. And no, that's not over reacting and is certainly not the reason why parents aren't allowed to beat, or "spank", their kids. Actually, kids that are spanked on a regular basis grow numb to it, and it doesn't teach them a lesson - especially if the punishment doesn't fit the crime. It would be those kids that would be the type to go out and throw pie in a stranger's face. "

HRPuffinstuff wrote on Mar 12, 2008 10:28 AM:

" Hold on....are some people actually saying that what these kids did was okay, simply because they didn't shoot the woman or beat her up. This is supposed to be okay because they weren't peddling crack? It's okay to walk up to some stranger's house and throw a pie in their face as long as they didn't shoot up their school or rob a bank? Some people have some messed up values and priorities. I'm not saying they should go to jail or something, but what they did was wrong and they deserve to be punished. What kind of example are some of you commenters setting when you laugh it off and say "Kids will be kids, at least they didn't kill someone"? "

HRPuffinstuff wrote on Mar 12, 2008 10:23 AM:

And their friends probably peed their pants laughing over this video that they no doubt watched over and over and over again. However, if my kid were responsible for something like this, he'd be wishing he was sent to jail compared to the punishment that faces him at home! The first privilege that would be taken away from him would be his friends. Then I'd make him eat pie until he pukes. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner would be pie. And let's not forget morning and afternoon snacks! There'd be no t.v., no phone, no going out, no nothing but homework and writing a nice long apology letter - along with an offer to do work around his victim's home until he's sufficiently made up for throwing a pie in the woman's face. And that's only the beginning.... "

Just because a woman answers the door does'nt mean she is alone. She may have a husband or son who would defend her. I saw my Father jump a fence chasing a teenage boy that he thought was being rude to my older sister. "

" to "imamom": (BTW, me., too)... To some, getting a pie in the face might be "no big deal" (same with "tickling").

For others, it IS a big deal!... It doesn't matter if WE think the behavior is not a big deal ("Hey, it's just tickling!" or "It's just a pie in the face!") - what matters is respecting the other person's boundaries. These pranksters DID NOT know their victim, that it might NOT be "okay" with her. She might have answered the door carrying her infant, or that the victim might be an elderly person with balance or heart conditions! Would this story be as FUNNY if the person had experienced a heart attack from the extreme startlement?

And BTW, tickling (and "pie in the face") may sound like an innocuous activity, and indeed it can be fun and harmless if it's engaged in voluntarily or among people who know each well. "Excessive tickling" IS documented as a form of abuse (not my "overreaction"), because to continue such behavior despite the individual's/victim's - child or adult - crying, gagging or wetting their pants despite please to "stop" is ABUSIVE, and borders on sadistic. Further, That it was videotaped is akin to HARASSMENT, as it will be HER HOME, HER FACE, HER INDIGNITY, played countless times to MORE strangers online (or TV??). How would YOU feel, knowing YOUR Mom was assaulted and insulted by STRANGERS this way?? Even TICKLING someone can cross the line into ABUSE (it doesn't HURT? Who are you to KNOW?). I hope this gets tracked back to the punks, and that they are appropriately punished. It's DISRESPECT (at best?), and assault (at worst), but NEITHER are safe or to be condoned! This "prank" in my opinion was malicious for the following 3 reasons: 1. there was a specific person being targeted (as opposed to an inanimate object) 2. there was physical contact with the victim 3. the event was recorded (assumably to share on a forum such as youtube). We have to draw a line at some point between "kids being kids" and kids carrying out criminal acts. "

You may think it is funny, but you are not a woman who is fairly new to town....who felt threatened. "
