20 Questions with IWU’s Rachel Anderson

BLOOMINGTON — Today we’re in the presence of an American icon in Illinois Wesleyan track standout Rachel Anderson. OK, maybe that’s a stretch. But it’s not a stretch to say an American icon’s blood runs through the Titans senior as she claims founding father Benjamin Franklin as a distant relative.

She really stresses the “distant” part.

“But related is related,” said the Clinton High School graduate.

Recently, Anderson had four victories to help the Titans to the school’s first College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin championship. She also was the national NCAA Division III indoor 400 champion in 2006 and 2007 and was also the national outdoor 400 champion. She’ll be seeking her third indoor national title this weekend in Ada, Ohio.

The sprinter is the subject of this week’s “20 Questions,” a weekly question-and-answer segment that profiles athletes at Illinois State and Illinois Wesleyan.

1. What is the best restaurant in B-N? Hands down, Avanti’s. You can’t beat pizza bread, especially since it so reasonably priced for us poor college students.

2. What is your favorite class? I honestly have enjoyed almost every one of my classes at IWU, but two of my favorite classes have been in business law. In Business Law II, we have to argue cases on a side appointed by the professor.

3. Who is your favorite athlete? Dwayne Bowe. He may not be well known now, but just wait, he’ll be a star receiver soon! If he can play that good with the Kansas City Chiefs, he could have really been good somewhere else.

4. What sport are you worst at? Anything considered a sport I am terrible at. I have zero hand-eye coordination, which is why I run track.

5. What do you do in your spare time? As a second-semester senior, life is pretty good, so I have a lot of spare time. Currently, I am attempting to watch all 10 seasons of the TV show “Friends.” ... I have three down already.

6. What is there fun to do in Clinton? Better question: What isn’t fun to do in Clinton? Honestly, Clinton Lake is probably our biggest draw, but El Rey (a Mexican restaurant) should be a close second.

7. What is your favorite quote? “We must all hang together, or assuredly we shall all hang separately” by Benjamin Franklin. I like that quote because it’s all about staying together and supporting each other, just like a team. But honestly, I may just like that quote because I am related to Mr. Franklin (distantly, but related is related!)

8. What do you want to be when you grow up? A pharmacist

9. Who would you put on the $100 bill? Isn’t my relative Benjamin Franklin already on the $100 bill? Wouldn’t change it!

10. What smell consistently reminds you of your childhood? Those delicious decorated sugar cookies from Denny’s Doughnuts! I love them so much that I am having them at my wedding in June.

11. When do you laugh the hardest? I laugh really loud and really hard all the time. It isn’t too hard to make me laugh.

12. When do you feel overwhelmed? Finals is always a stressful time, but I would say I was most overwhelmed last semester with school, track, applying to graduate programs and studying for the PCAT.

13. Who is the most influential figure in your life? My parents have obviously been very influential, from raising me, coaching me, and helping me decide where I was going to go to college. They have been at almost every track meet since I was in junior high all the way through college and that has meant the world to me.

14. If you could, what food would you put in an IV drip? Close contest between cheese puffs and Twist N Shouts (Wal-Mart’s version of Oreos, they are much better)

15. What is your favorite article of clothing? I just purchased an “IWU alumni” sweatshirt. Although I haven’t graduated yet, I do wear it around my house. Since it is brand new, it has that great new sweatshirt feel to it.

16. I need a Dummies Guide to ...: How to carry a tune. I can’t sing at all.

17. I could write a Dummies Guide to …: Cleaning. I love cleaning.

18. What is your favorite off-campus place in B-N? Fusion Brew. The best coffee shop in town, and I thought that even before I worked there! But seriously, Fusion Brew has a great atmosphere to do homework or just hang out, plus there are delicious drinks and treats.

19. What is your favorite place on campus? The Hansen Student Center will forever be my favorite place on campus — it’s the location where I had the opportunity to meet and get a picture taken with Terry O’Quinn, a star on “Lost.”

20. When you were a kid, who was on the poster on your bedroom wall? My walls mainly had pictures/posters of horses, oh, and the Backstreet Boys.
