U High's standout Eric McCullough to attend IWU

NORMAL -- Turning down 11 Division I scholarship offers, University High School basketball and baseball standout Eric McCullough has decided to attend Illinois Wesleyan, his father Greg confirmed on Monday.

The 6-foot-9 McCullough averaged 13.3 points, 6.2 rebounds and 3.4 blocks for the Pioneers while earning Corn Belt Conference all-star honors as a senior.

According to Greg McCullough, the opportunity to play both basketball and baseball was a large factor in his son picking Wesleyan. Eric McCullough is a pitcher in baseball.

Even though McCullough will not receive a scholarship at Division III IWU, Titan basketball coach Ron Rose and baseball coach Dennis Martel are not permitted by NCAA rules to comment until McCullough’s deposit has been received by the school’s admissions office.

" It's great to see a kid make a thoughtful decision in this regard. IWU is very fortunate to get a player of this caliber, when it would have been just as easy for him to go with the "full ride" at the DI or DII level. Good Luck Eric & the Titans next year. Your whole hometown will be cheering for you! "

" We are again looking forward to Titan BB this fall, both ladies and men. You will find no finer group of student/athletes!
Best wishes to all on a fine season, congratulations also to the coaches on recruiting success. "

" A great college program just got a little better. A local kid staying here to play in college is a good thing. This should give the IWU fans something to cheer about. That place will be rockin' "

IWU has a pretty great basketball program, and it'll be great to see how this guy does. "
