13-year-old's death in YWCA incident considered drowning
BLOOMINGTON -- A 13-year-old boy was pronounced dead Tuesday from brain damage suffered in a YWCA swimming pool Monday afternoon. The boy, CoJuan M. Harris, was pronounced brain dead about 8 a.m. and removed from life support equipment about 11:30 a.m. at OSF St. Joseph Medical Center, Bloomington, according to a statement from the McLean County coroner’s office. He suffered brain damage due to lack of oxygen, and his death is considered a drowning, the statement says. The Bloomington Junior High School sixth-grader was one of 25 children at the YWCA, 1201 N. Hershey Road, for a Boys and Girls Club of Bloomington-Normal field trip. Medical personnel, police and firefighters were called to the pool about 2:45 p.m. Monday. The boy was pulled from the pool by people present and cardiopulmonary resuscitation was performed, said Becky Hines, CEO of the YWCA in Bloomington. Coroner Beth Kimmerling said her office is investigating the boy’s death, but she did not immediately have details on how long the boy was underwater or who pulled him from the pool. “I think there are some questions that remain to be answered and we are in the process of gathering information,” Kimmerling said. Linda Beer of Downs said she was in the pool for an aquatic therapy session when a lifeguard started screaming “Out of the pool, out of the pool.” She said the boy was motionless when pulled from the water. “If I had known he was right there -- I was right by him -- I could’ve dived down and brought the little guy up,” Beer said. Beer said there were upward of 25 people in the water when a young man, who appeared to be a chaperone, began pulling the boy from the water. YWCA spokeswoman Pat Poppe said the pool would remain closed at least through Sunday. “It’s really out of respect for the family,” Poppe said Tuesday, adding there will need to be some inspections and other maintenance before it reopens. | Fit Kids event at YWCA canceled Evelyn Young, director of the Boys and Girls Club, said Monday the boy’s father was with him at St. Joseph. Hines said the YWCA is conducting an internal investigation into the incident. There was no concern with the pool itself, she said, but officials planned to interview staff members. Hines declined to release further information, saying they were still gathering facts, such as who was in the pool at the time of the incident. |
