DALLAS -- A regulator who oversaw safety inspections at Southwest Airlines has been removed from his job.

The Federal Aviation Administration says Thomas Stuckey is no longer the director of flight standards for the agency’s southwest regional office.

FAA spokesman Laura Brown said Monday that Stuckey was reassigned to “an administrative position that doesn’t have safety oversight.”

Stuckey’s regional office was criticized last week at a congressional hearing into the FAA oversight of airline safety.

One inspector testified that Stuckey dismissed complaints that a safety supervisor was too lax in dealing with Dallas-based Southwest Airlines Co.

The FAA recently hit Southwest Airlines with a $10.2 million civil penalty for flying planes that had missed safety inspections.
