Court statement: Birdshot attack gang-related retaliation
Advertisement

BLOOMINGTON -- Two men accused of peppering three people with birdshot Sunday must each post $10,000 to be released from jail.

Keiahty Jones, 21, of the 300 block of West Graham Street, and Eddie Spice, 18, of the 1100 block of South Main Street, were in court Tuesday, when formal charges were read.

Eddie Spice

The men are charged with two counts each of aggravated battery with a firearm. Jones faces an additional charge of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon.

Authorities said Spice fired the birdshot about 5:15 p.m. Sunday in the 1400 block of North Western Avenue toward people who had attended a cookout and were headed out to go fishing.

Keiahty Jones

According to a probable cause statement read in court Tuesday, the shots were fired as part of a gang-related retaliation over a previous fight.

A 17-year-old boy and a 35-year-old woman were treated for injuries, and another woman received a welt on her side, police and a hospital official said Monday. Thyesha Jenkins, of the 1400 block of North Western Avenue, and the boy, Dcamron King, of the 1600 block of West Olive Street, were treated and released at BroMenn Regional Medical Center, Normal.

Jenkins told police she, the woman who received a welt, a third woman and a 1-year-old child had been at the cookout at a housing complex and were heading out to go fishing when a car stopped at the intersection of Western Avenue and Forrest Street, police said. She told officers two men got out and one grabbed a shotgun from the trunk of a car and fired two shots in her direction, said police spokesman Duane Moss.

The 17-year-old injured boy was nearby, police said.

An officer later spotted the car and pulled the men over near the intersection of Morris Avenue and Locust Street, police said. Jones and Spice were arrested, and there also were two 15-year-old boys in the car.

It was unclear who was being targeted, Moss said Tuesday afternoon.

Three spectators were ordered to leave Tuesday’s custody hearing by police after they made loud remarks about the amount of the bond.

Jones and Spice were ordered to return for an April 18 arraignment.

I think if the Pantagraph PRINTED PHOTO"S (ie: MUGSHOTS) of every person arrested and charged with a crime (I didn't say 'guilty; I said "charged with'), some of these people might THINK TWICE before (and REFRAIN from) doing something "stupid' the next time (or, if innocent, being guilty of being in the wrong place at the wrong time!).
Also, there will be a lot less UNNECESSARY arguing over whether said persons were 'this race, that race' etc.
In the case of someone being sought by police, pictures are ALWAYS better than rough descriptions in helping citizens spot and report said "alleged" criminal...

If anyone is on the property without proper ID or accompanied by a person with a valid ID, they either leave or go to jail for trespassing. I have seen signs up at these places warning against tresspassing, yet no security to enforce the rules. When the judges start handing out real stiff sentences to these blight on society trash things won't change. It'll take everyone to step up and the police and judicial system has to take the lead. Remember an elderly gentleman was beat to death in the parking lot of a grocery store shortly after a new apartment complex was built several years ago. The store went belly up after that and that area is now not someplace you want to be where before it was very quiet and safe. "

An audit of who is authorized and who is actually "staying" at these residences is in order. Why do the law abiding citizens have to live in fear because the people entrusted with managing these areas will not do their jobs? If they are not in compliance evict them. "

I know that I recently came across the names of several people who live in those apartments *cough* this article *cough* and several of those people had felonies, or at least numerous arrests. FYI: The McLean County public access site is great for looking up the criminal & traffic records of people in town.

One additionalfact that I have always been fascinated by is that the vast majority of violent crime victims have criminal histories themselves. Typically, violent acts are not as random as many believe. "

Half of them looked like felons. There would be fights involving literally 50+ kids that cops would come and try to break up. Id hear them out hootin and hollerin at 2-3 in the morning. It was truly interesting. Of course, there were a few that I had an opportunity to meet. They seemed like ordinary folks trying to get by. On the other hand though, I also saw RAC trucks there delivering big screens on several occasions. I saw a big screen on the curb for trash pickup once. I certainly dont understand how someone can afford a big screen from rent a center and then have to claim that they need assistance. All in all, living over there was a unique experience I guess. "

Even at close range it will not penetrate bone or very much tissue to get to vital areas so it will not stop someone determined to do you harm (esp if they are on drugs) unless you manage a very lucky shot. These people are very fortunate that the idiots who fired the shotgun at them were stupid enough to load it with birdshot. Since I cannot post web links here, go to google and search for some articles written on home defense and birdshot. There is a really good write up involving the "Box of truth" a website where a guy uses ballistic gelatin and sheets of drywall to measure round penetration and effectiveness. Start evicting the criminals and their families if they can not obey the rules and laws. It will not take many evictions before the parents of these hoodlums will take heed. I suggest the City Council and Mayor call for an investigation into the repeated criminal activity emminating from our subsidised housing areas. The rules governing subsidised housing are there to protect the neighbors and those living in these housing units. There are sanctions for those that abuse the rules and break the law. One of which is revoking their subsidy and benifits. Its time the rules were enforced. Spare no sad story of woe for those that allow their teenagers to terrorize these neighborhoods. You take away their subsidy and evict them. Maybe after a few are held accountable and evicted the parents of these juviniles will take notice and put an end to this foolishness. "

" re:"Country Boy" I'm going to have to disagree with you. Birdshot does have hundreds of little pellets but it is one of the least lethal things, short of rubber pellets, that you can use in a shotgun. Even a close range blast will typically only cause a lot of small flesh wounds because the little pellets lack penetrating power - they are designed to kill birds after all (Do not load a home defense shotgun with this stuff, it will most likely fail and you are only putting yourself in danger by doing so). Of course this doesn't excuse this behavior and these guys should be held up on attempted murder charges. Luckily, for everyone involved, these thugs were too stupid to be using buckshot or slugs. "
