Comcast nixes 20 Cardinal telecasts

BLOOMINGTON -- Some baseball fans will miss the televised series between the St. Louis Cardinals and the Milwaukee Brewers this week. | La Russa's juggling act a success, so far | MLB page

In total, Comcast cable customers will not be able to watch 20 out of 130 Cardinals games that are available on Fox Sports Net Midwest this season, said FSN Midwest spokesman Geoff Goldman.

The first game Comcast will not air is tonight’s match-up between the Cardinals and Brewers.

The additional charge for Comcast to air that group of games played a role in the company’s decision, said John Niebur, Comcast director for the Peoria district, which includes Bloomington-Normal.

“We will not be carrying those games,” Niebur said.

Cardinals fans across Central Illinois likely are letting out a collective groan: Not this again.

The same situation happened to baseball fans last year when FSN Midwest added 20 televised games to its lineup and offered those to cable and satellite providers for an additional charge. Both Insight Communications and Mediacom originally did not air the extra games, though Mediacom later reached an agreement with FSN Midwest.

Satellite customers also lost access to Cardinals baseball games while the station and companies were in a feud over distribution costs at the start of the 2007 season.

Now this year, Comcast — which took control of Insight’s Illinois market at the start of the year — did not choose to carry the extra ball games. About 90 percent of FSN Midwest’s cable subscribers in the Cardinals territory agreed to offer all 130 games, including DirecTV, Dish Network and Mediacom, Goldman said.

“Comcast is the biggest of the few that will not,” Goldman said. “We respect their decision and apologize to the fans that may be inconvenienced.”

Comcast serves Bloomington-Normal cable customers while Mediacom serves parts of the surrounding towns. But many Central Illinois Mediacom subscribers would not be affected either way as not all of the company’s viewers receive FSN Midwest in the first place.

Television customers also may choose to subscribe to satellite providers DirecTV and Dish Network in lieu of traditional cable.

FSN Midwest charges an extra fee to cable and satellite companies for the 20 games to cover its additional charges for television rights and production costs. Goldman declined to release the cost for the companies to include the extra games in their lineups.

" This is the same thing cable pulled last year. I had DISH network for 10 years, switched to Insight in April last year after the Cardinal games were blacked out for a while. Then when DirecTV and DISH settled, Insight get blacked out of 20 games - I switched to DirecTV after just 7 weeks with Insight. I can easily tell you, I had more problems and dissatisifaction with my TV service in those 7 weeks than I did in the previous 10 years and the 1 year since with satellite TV service. It is very rare when a storm blocks out the service and I have not ever had that happen in the winter months. Go Cardinals!! "

" 20 out of 130 games will not be aired. Do you really need to watch that many games? Comcast could have raised their rates again to give you these 20 games. I hear all you people complain about Comcast and Insight and say your going to switch. Nobody is keeping you from changing. It is a free market. Do what you want. If you dont like Walmarts produce then go to Krogers. Its your choice. Good luck getting a service man to your house with Dish. And when you do you better break out your check book. Comcast is adding 25 more HD channels at the end of the month as well as deleting some. Changes happen with every company takeover. "

" yet more people joining the line at the insight office to return their boxes.

seriously. how could comcast be so unbelievably stupid? "

" I want to urge all Cards fans to go to www.comcastmustdie.com to complain about the Cards games that are not being broadcast. The exectutives at Comcast check this website for complaints. If we flood them with complaints, maybe that will wake them up! "

" I'm not a Cardinal fan, (Cubs) but my son is (it gets lively here at the ole homestead!) but it is a bummer for him not to be able to watch his favorite team play. Sounds like we'll just have to see them more in person. "

" My In-Laws have the dish and refuse to admit to its deficiencies but I have been to their home a number of times and the service was not available. I am sure Dish owners have seen the screen; It is black with a small blue box in the bottom that says something like "Service not available". "

" I've had Direct TV for years and the 5 minutes it's out twice a year during a storm is worth not having to deal with Comcast and/or Insight. "

" Wow...I have been asking since February if there would be any games blacked out...I was told "Comcast is the biggest company there is...We will not be blacking out any games. Insight could not afford the games...we can!" Well...there are definately bigger issues in the world than baseball games...I will be the first to admit this. But it still is frustrating to know that the bills go up and the services go down. "

" This is just one more nail in the coffin for Comcast, I am switching to DirectTV! (Even if the signal does go out during storms, its still cheaper and better quality) "

" We canceled all our premium channels last week and have since decided to switch to DirecTV as well. Everyone I've spoken to who has made the switch seems to agree that it's a change for the better.

For what it's worth, I will continue to be a Comcast broadband customer as long as I'm satisfied with the service. I've really been pleased overall, save the "moving servers" fiasco from a couple years ago. "

" Careful normalguy, my daughter-in law's Dad bragged about watching the superbowl on his bigscreen a few years ago. The dish malfunctioned and he watched the game on a 9 in. black&white. He said the dish froze but I don't know if that is possible. At any rate I am happy for you that you have the things you have. I know sports are very important to most men and some women. I like football, The only baseball I see is my grandkid's games. "

" What a crock. They raised my rates and now they're reducing services. Comcastic? I think not. More like Communist-Cast the way they're trying to control the people. But I've got a dish-errific idea how I'm going to solve the problem and beat the system. "

Gallows98 wrote on Apr 15, 2008 8:13 AM:

" I'm not a Cards fan either but I do think that I'll be looking into Direct TV myself. This is ridiculous! What's going to happen when they decide (for us of course) that the price to show ANY sports is too much?? I'll keep my internet for now unless there's a better deal to be had. "

pseudo-intellectual wrote on Apr 15, 2008 7:17 AM:

" This is probably just one small example of how we can expect to be "served" by Comcast in the future. The company has already RAISED its rates without giving its customers any new services. At the end of this month it is DELETING channels such as the NFL Network. Is it possible they want us to switch to satellite? I'm definitely going to cancel channel packages and services I don't need. "

normalguy wrote on Apr 15, 2008 7:08 AM:

" ah yes my wonderful dish network satellite dish. fox sports midwest is included in even the most basic plans, and since i have an hdtv i get most of those games in hd. this fall when people want to watch the isu redbirds and realize that comcast has dropped espnu, ill still be watching my dish. and one more note for cubs/sox fans by the end of april i will have wgn in hd as well.( just set the dvr for the day games) life is good on the dish side of the street . its very IMPRESSIVE. call your local dealer today.
