One deer killed, second on the run after breaking into high school
STREATOR -- A young deer and one of its parents broke into Streator High School about two hours after classes were over Thursday, resulting in the death of the doe.
“I feel sorry when any animal has to be put down,” said school security officer Brian Wahl. “But, thankfully, the students were already gone or there might have been a bad situation” with injuries.
The deer broke though two windows on the north side of the building, with the adult breaking a third window on that side to make its escape. The doe was so badly injured from glass shards that it had to be destroyed by LaSalle County animal control officers.
There was no damage to the school except for the broken windows and blinds, said Wahl
There is a wooded area near the football stadium where the deer may have come from, he said.
“We see deer out there once in a while,” Wahl said. “It was a nice day with people outside, so they (the deer) might have got spooked and panicked, jumping through the windows.”
The adult escaped before it could be determined whether it was male or female.
