Report: Woman facing charges for letting people stay at hotel for free

BLOOMINGTON -- The road to jail can be paved with good intentions. A woman who was a hotel employee said she felt sorry for the homeless so she made pass keys so they’d have a place to stay, a Bloomington police report said.

The incident was discovered by another employee shortly after 3 a.m. Friday at the Clarion Hotel, 1219 Holiday Drive, a Bloomington police report said. He found people in a hot tub and discovered five rooms not rented were occupied by about 20 people.

The rest of the people, whom the woman claimed were mostly homeless, were issued criminal trespass warnings and ordered to leave. The woman said more rooms were occupied than she made pass keys for.

The only person taken to McLean County Jail early Friday morning was the woman. She faces formal charges Saturday in court relating to theft of labor and services and criminal damage, McLean County Jail records said.

Items damaged or otherwise affected by the illegal stay were four closet doors, three air vents, a plastic plant, three microwaves, a mini refrigerator, a comforter and three bottles of liquor.

" If she was so concerned about them, why not let the homeless stay at her place? Her heart was in the right place, but still wrong to just let them stay free of charge. How do you think hotels make their money? Oh yeah, by charging people for the rooms. Plus aren't there homeless shelters around? Oh, but I'm guessing they don't have hot tubs and/or liquor.

So all of you who think she did right by letting the homeless stay there, open up your homes to them. Let them come and destroy your property and just right it off as, 'well I was doing the right thing'. "

" The manager did the right thing. The hotel is NOT a homeless shelter. We have the Salvation Army etc. There is something missing in this story. This girl knew 20 homeless people?? C'mon people. If she wanted to do something for "homeless" people...show them how to get to the other shelters. "

" RPBossLady - Last I heard, the Jesus House doesn't offer overnight accommodation. The only places to sleep for the homeless are the Mission (IF you don't have a criminal record, and meet other criteria) or the Salvation Army (IF you're male, and don't mind sleeping in their overcrowded conditions) - other options include your car, if you have one; a friend's house, if you have one; a park bench, if you don't mind freezing; etc.

I understand the sentiments about being caring and compassionate, but this is still theft on behalf of the employee (did you catch her name yet, RPBossLady? Does it make you feel any better that they posted it?) - if I were to take money from my place of employment and give it to a homeless person to pay for a hotel room, that would be the same thing. "

" ok..even if she was just trying to help even though what was done is illegal...did they have to tear up the place. isnt it a shame that they couldnt just except the gesture, but no they had to abuse it further and cause damage..tell you something. "

" To all those that feel she didn't do anything wrong b/c she was helping the less fortunate - how would you feel if your neighbors opened up your home when you were gone and allowed the less fortunate to occupy while you were away? There are other ways to assist people that are legal. "

" Mr. Chanofsky,

You can take your "two" attempts at bettering the community and erase that off your board...you just threw a 23 year old girl in jail and many homeless people back on the streets. You in all reality just hurt the community, we fit the bill on the 23 year olds jail time and pay for the shelter for the homeless you seem to despise.

OBTW if you want to better the community it will take a heck of a lot more than hosting breakfast two times. "

" So if you shop lift, or steal otherwise, and give the proceeds to someone you feel needs a handout - that is noble? WRONG!!! "

" Her story that they were homeless sounds a little fishy to me. Do homeless people usually carry around swimsuits just in case there's a hot tub to jump into? "

they were not charged with trespassing, they were just given warnings. "

" How sad it is that this is what America has become. We punish people for careing for their fellow man, while the most evil of deeds often get rewarded (look at our legal system, medical profession, and the great insurance scam). We are not a free nation, nor are we compasionate. We have become a nation of parasites, feeding off of the misfortune of others so we can acquire social status. We all know of the great social divide in this nation, and its not about race, sex, or religion. It is about geting yours at whatever cost no matter how many you have to hurt to get it. "

Blondie - agreed. I'm sure something bad about State Farm will wind up in here too.
