Twin City mom earns spot in top 25 of national contest

BLOOMINGTON -- Twin City community leader Carla Campbell-Jackson is among 25 finalists in a national contest that aims to send one U.S. mother to watch the Olympic Games in Beijing this summer.

More than 2,500 nominations were submitted for the first-ever Tyson Gold Medal Mom contest. They were reduced to 25 finalists, and online voting will determine who wins the trip for two, said Brittany Gorniewicz, a spokeswoman for the sponsor, Tyson Foods.

Through June 11, people can go to www.goldmedalmom.com and vote for their favorite finalist. The public’s vote will determine the winner.

Campbell-Jackson’s nomination, as well as those of the 24 other finalists, can be viewed at the site.

Her husband, Kevin, and son, Bradley, nominated her in the contest.

The Bloomington woman stood out as an extremely inspiring and dedicated woman among the thousands of nominees, according to a news release on the contest.

Campbell-Jackson was described as a wonderful mother and wife, a friend, mentor, community leader and civil rights activist.

Campbell-Jackson was selected by President Bush for his Points of Light Volunteerism Award. She also was chosen a WEEK-TV “Woman to Watch.”

Among her other activities, she also she serves on the boards of directors for the YWCA and Girl Scouts, is vice president of the NAACP, volunteers at homeless shelters and public schools and commits herself to helping those that are less fortunate, the release and Web site said.
