NORMAL -- Someone told Normal police of a rumor about student taking a gun to Normal Community High School Monday, but nothing was found to substantiate the rumor, said Unit 5 Superintendent Gary Niehaus in a statement on the school’s Web site.

School officials put precautionary procedures into place, conducted a thorough investigation and found no weapons.

“At this time, we have no information that substantiates that a weapon was brought to school,” the superintendent said. “The school day continued without interruption or incident.”

" I know that there are plenty of concerned parents at every school. My intentions were to give a wake-up call to the many that will actually be ignorant to the fact that this "situation" happens everywhere, and that NO school is above it. I apologize if I ruffeled the NCHS feathers. As were mine, when West was assaulted during our trying times. Let this be a lessen to all that, although we may love our schools, the fact remains thqat we need to protect our kids EVERYWHERE! "

" If one idiotic NCHS parent thinks that can't happen at NCHS, they are clueless, hello! But you are slightly unfair "in your travels" to judge all NCHS' parents character by one person's comments/actions. It's interesting how one town can be so split. I will defend most of us NCHS parents who do know that our crap stinks as everyone elses does, but do see how it may be possible that some NCHS parents could feel the same way about West, especially if you've ever attended a West softball or volleyball game, quite an angry crowd. What matters is that we should all be supportive of each other's kids and care for all of their safety. And be on top of Unit 5 to do their job to protect them. It doesn't matter what school you go to, kids/parents shouldn't be classified by where they attend. Jay G, slow down and shake off some of that bitter hostility you've got going on toward your sister school. Instead we can all hope you would pray for NCHS' students' safety as most of us caring parents would do for yours as well. "

" To Fam5.....

You must be a NCHS Parent. In my travels, I have found most NCHS people think theirs doesn't stink. Recently, when West was having its problems with fighting and instances of rumors of kids with weapons, pantagraph readers were commenting on the stories by saying, "This would NEVER happen at NCHS", and "West is inferior to NCHS, so its no surprise that West is having these problems".

Now, the shoe is on the other foot. How does it feel? By your response to my comment, I'd say that you don't like it much. Well Fam5, welcome to reality. "

" The system in place worked. Had messages on phone, cell and work phones. Administration should be commended for keeping parents informed of the situation even if it was a rumor. At other schools my kids have attended, would have found out about something like this days later through a third party or not at all. "
