No arrests, no suspects in shooting outside apartment building
Police had responded to noise call earlier Monday night
BLOOMINGTON -- Police said Tuesday that they weren’t getting much help from witnesses — or the injured victim — in determining what prompted a shooting Monday night outside an apartment building. There were no suspects and no arrests Tuesday after Brian Greer, 32, of Bloomington was shot in the shoulder around 11:30 p.m. Monday in a parking lot at 301 Fox Hill Circle, police said. Greer, not a resident of the Fox Hill Apartments, was treated and released from a Normal hospital, a nursing supervisor said Tuesday. Police had been called out to 301 Fox Hill Circle around 11:15 p.m. to reports of a fight or loud subject, police said. The responding officer spoke to a group of people who said they were having a barbecue and asked them to quiet down, said police spokesman Dave White. That officer then left the scene. About 15 minutes later, police received new reports of someone being shot as a large crowd again milled around in the parking lot outside 301 Fox Hill Circle, police said. Witnesses said two or three shots were fired, White said, and the barbecue was being hosted by a resident of the complex. The same group of people is believed to be involved in both calls for assistance, police said. A wounded Greer was in a blue GMC van owned by a co-worker when police arrived, speeding away from the scene apparently to a local hospital. Harris said police conducted a traffic stop on the van, found the victim inside, and Greer was taken to BroMenn Regional Medical Center, Normal. A second vehicle, a red sedan, was also stopped driving away from the scene at high speed, but no one inside was arrested after questioning by police. Greer and several witnesses have been questioned by police, but most have said they didn’t know what happened or didn’t see the shooting itself. Greer told police he didn’t know anything or who shot him, White said. It was unclear Tuesday what type of gun was used, police said. A message left at Fox Hill Apartments management was not immediately returned. Stabbing death In an unrelated case, White said Tuesday that there have been no arrests in the stabbing death of Janae Towns, a mother of five from the south Chicago suburb of Frankfort. Towns was stabbed about 6:30 a.m. April 3 in an apartment building in the 1900 block of Tracy Drive, police have said. She died about an hour later at OSF St. Joseph Medical Center, Bloomington. Police have released little information on the case, citing the ongoing investigation. What police have said is that the stabbing wasn’t a random incident and that it appeared to be linked to a romantic dispute. Sharon K. Wolfe contributed to this report. |
