Another .22-caliber round found on Illinois State campus

NORMAL -- Another round of live .22-caliber ammunition was found on the Illinois State University campus Monday, more than three weeks after nine similar rounds were found at three separate campus locations, police said.

The Super X brand round was found by a ISU parking services employee around 10 a.m. in Lot G83 near the Ropp Agriculture Building, an ISU police report said. The round was scuffed and in poor condition, and it had apparently been there for some time, the police report said.

Two rounds were found in a ninth-floor men’s restroom of Atkin residence hall April 19. Six rounds were also found on the front porch of Dunn-Barton residence halls, and another round was found near DeGarmo Hall. All were .22-caliber, Super X brand.

Police believe the April rounds came from the same source, but officials said there were few real leads after interviews with possible witnesses and those who called police after discovering the rounds.

If a student was responsible for bringing the ammunition to campus, the student likely would be in violation of ISU’s student conduct code, university officials said in April.

Police have stressed that no weapons have been found and no individuals have been found to be carrying weapons.

" A .22 caliber weapon can certainly get the job done. In the 70s, it was the weapon of choice for the mafia to use in internal killings. If you jammed the muzzle right next to the victim, it barely made any noise. Negligible recoil. Any idiot could use it, and the gun itself could be very tiny. People have also killed people with .22 rifles, but you lose lots of your concealability with that system. Of course, finding .22 ammunition doesn't mean someone was planning to use it for anything nefarious ("good job" to the cops for taking the possibility seriously, though). "

" To Only in America...are you saying a 22 and a pellet gun are one in the same? Your moniker sums your comments up perfectly...only in America do we have virtually unlimited gun ownership (and one of the highest crime rates in the world to go along with it) and only in America are people like you allowed to post the comments you post. " To, Only In America and Rolling Eyes: If they had not reported this and something had happened on Campus then you two would have been the first filling up this blog wanting to know where the Pantagraph was and why they did not report about these findings sooner so that something could have been done. There is just no way to make people like you happy! Good job ISU! Thanks for looking out of our kids! "
