Nursing home agrees to reduced fine in sex-offender case

BLOOMINGTON -- A Bloomington nursing home has agreed to pay a reduced $14,500 fine for failing to protect residents from a sex offender who was a patient at the facility, the Illinois Department of Public Health said Friday afternoon.
Asta Care, 1509 N. Calhoun St., was charged with failure to screen a male resident who made inappropriate sexual advances to staff and two mentally disabled residents, according to state health department records. The allegations were noted in nursing records dating to October 2006 at the 117-skilled bed facility, said state documents.
The man, who was identified as a sexual offender based upon his behavior at a previous nursing home, was allowed to remain at Asta Care after complaints were made by staff, the state health department said.
The nursing home initially had been targeted for a $22,500 fine. That sum was reduced to $14,500 for the Type A violation during settlement proceedings, said Kimberly Parker, spokeswoman for the state public health department.
The nursing home has already paid the fine, Parker said, though she could not provide a date the settlement was reached Friday.
A message left for Asta Care’s administrator was not immediately returned Friday.
