MASCOUTAH -- Dozens of teenagers from around Illinois have gotten a crash course in how to handle difficult driving situations from stunt and stock car drivers.

The teens were at a driving course set up Monday at a MidAmerica St. Louis Airport flight ramp.

The training is part of a program run by the Illinois Department of Transportation and Ford Motor Company Fund. “Operation Teen Safe Driving” is a statewide campaign to halt driving accidents among teenagers.

IDOT spokesman Mike Stout says the program was in 105 schools and thousands of students have participated.

The state says that in the first four months of the first year of the program, teenage car accident fatalities fell in Illinois to 24 from 67.

" This is an awsome idea! I hope all states have this type of program. If it saves one teen, then obviously it's worth it. "
