Fire during burglary may close 'gutted' restaurant for months
Police: No indication second restaurant theft is connected

BLOOMINGTON -- An east-side restaurant will likely remain closed for months because of a fire that started during a burglary early Monday, the owner said Tuesday.

Greg Wilson, owner of Wings Etc., said there was no major structural damage to the building at 511 Chancellor Drive, but it will probably be two or three months before the business reopens.

All of the contents will have to be cleared because of the spread of the flames, he said.

“It’s pretty extensive,” Wilson said. “Basically, the whole inside is gutted.”

A police officer saw smoke coming from the eaves of the restaurant when responding to a burglar alarm about 1:15 a.m. Monday, police previously said. Firefighters quickly extinguished the flames, and authorities later discovered the restaurant’s safe and an ATM had been cut open, authorities said.

Wilson said he did not know Tuesday how much was lost in the burglary and fire.

Police have declined so far to say how the safe and ATM were entered. Fire department officials are investigating the cause of the fire.

No new information was available from the police and fire departments Tuesday.

Another restaurant, another safe

Someone also broke into a second restaurant in southeast Bloomington and a safe inside late Sunday or early Monday, police said. Bloomington Police spokesman David White said he did not have any indication the two crimes were related.

Cash was stolen from a safe between 9:15 p.m. Sunday and 6:30 a.m. Monday at Longhorn Smokehouse, 5 Currency Drive.

We have a strong economy, good employment opportunities, 2 major universities in town and all that they offer. Relatively speaking property prices are pretty reasonable. Drive an hour north of here and you'll be paying 50% more for the same house. We have a slew of restaurants for a town our size with new ones coming in regularly. The infrastructure isn't bad, and the crime rate usually is fairly low.

I'm sorry for you that you're having a rough time with your marriage/life. I've been there. . . but they got better. I hope things work out better for you soon. "

I am being kept prisoner here, pretty much against mine and my kids will, because of a soon to be ex husband who can't think of anyone but himself. I moved here because he wanted a job that was offered to him here but I really didn't want to. So basically I have to live somewhere I don't want to because of selfishness. This is an awful town and gee, like the line in the movie Pleasantville....there is more outside of Pleasantville. Have you ever lived anywhere but here? If not then you have nothing to compare this place to. I DO!!!!!!!!! Everyone that is from here and hasn't lived anywhere else has no business saying this is the greatest place to live. That is like saying hamburger is better than steak and not even trying anything but hamburger. "

Well guess what?? I am from a real metro area. Ever heard Denver, Colorado. Can't get much more metro than that and yes I would give my eye teeth to move back there again. I am in the process of going to the dentist to have them pulled so I can (a joke for those who can't tell). And to Dumb Comment....I won't let the door hit me because if I get the chance to get out of this flea ridden town I will be moving alot faster than that door can close. "

- on a side note- this is not to bash all the officers on the force. they do the best they can with their limited resources! "

These crimes against the restaurants could have been done by anyone, including Whites born and raised in McClean County. Also, the economy has no bearing on criminal activity. How many of us who are law-abiding are going to break open a safe and burn a restaurant because our wages aren't keeping up with the cost of living. Gas is so expensive I think I'll rob a bank! There are only a few gas stations that are "safe" here -- and we have to be careful walking our dogs at night, even in "good" neighborhoods. Several homes are broken into each week, and a couple of stores are held up at gunpoint each week. And, our community is about 1/4 of the size of B-N. Sure, B-N has a couple of neighborhoods that aren't as safe as they used to be -- but I wouldn't hesitate to go for a walk at night in 80% of the neighborhoods in B-N. I used to live in Champaign, and still have family in B-N, so I spend quite a bit of time in B-N. Please don't judge unless you've lived in a real metro area -- it's all about perspective. "

Good luck finding a place that has our same population and less crime. We should appreciate what we have instead of everyone complaining about how horrible it is here. I just got home from visiting a relative in San Diego...in a nice burb that had "lock down" for their parks, littered with garbage and locks on baseball field entrances. You can go to Anderson Park and use the ball field anytime. free of graffiti, garbage and fell safe. We don't realize how nice it really is here because we haven't taken ourselves out of this place.
