Natural gas line ruptured in south Bloomington

UPDATED 3:55 p.m. Construction workers broke a 4-inch natural gas line along Morris Avenue near Fox Hill Circle, according to fire officials.

The break occurred after 1 p.m. just outside Fox Hill Apartments, Nicor spokesman Bernard Anderson said crews were still assessing how to repair it at 3:45 p.m. He said no evacuation would be necessary.

Morris Avenue already was closed for construction, and Bloomington Fire Capt. Les Siron said nobody was forced to leave the area.

The rising plume of gas created a mirage-like distortion in the air and there was a noticeable smell for blocks.

Residents at the nearby apartments couldn’t enter or leave the complex driveway, and they were told to stay inside and close windows and doors, Siron said.

Employees at the J. Michael Grosso law office, 1400 S. Morris Ave., chose to leave after smelling the leak from inside the building, he said.

Anderson said the rupture occurred in a looped line, so gas service could continue uninterrupted to all customers in the area.
