NORMAL — The first “Read & Rise” author showcase will be from noon to 5 p.m. July 19 at the Illinois State University Bone Student Center in Normal.

The multifaceted event for authors from Illinois and elsewhere is designed to encourage literacy and spotlight local authors. The showcase, sponsored by the McLean County Urban League and The Pantagraph, provides an opportunity for the public to attend writing-related workshops, book readings and mingle with authors.

The event will feature a teen writers’ contest that offers a cash prize and opportunity to be published on Pantagraph.com. Contest entry information and guidelines are available at www.authorshowcase.org.

“Our goals with this event are to promote interest in reading as well as promote Illinois authors,” event coordinator Tony Jones said. “We have a particular interest in promoting local authors. It’s amazing the number of established authors we have in our own backyard. We have several authors signed up already, but we have room for more.”

Authors interested in participating can visit www.authorshowcase.org. For more information, e-mail Jones at authorshowcase@aol.com or call (309) 242-4049.
