Backstreet Boys are back: Aug. 22 show scheduled at Coliseum

UPDATED 11:35 a.m. BLOOMINGTON -- The Backstreet Boys, one of the quintessential “boy bands” of the 1990s, will perform Aug. 22 at the U.S. Cellular Coliseum, the venue announced Wednesday.

The group, which touts $75 million in total album sales over the years, is touring a new album, “Unbreakable.”

Girlicious, a group created by the CW network’s reality TV series “The Pussycat Dolls Present: Girlicious,” will be the show’s opening act.

Tickets range from $22.50 to $42.50 and go on sale at 10 a.m. June 20. They can be purchased at the Coliseum box office, by telephone at (309) 454-5500, online at www.ticketmaster.com or in person at Ticketmaster locations.

The Backstreet Boys coming to town will be one less than the original quintet after Kevin Richardson left the group in 2006 “with the full blessing of his teammates,” according to the group’s official biography.

The group is now Nick Carter, Howie Dorough, Brian Littrell and AJ McLean, and the official band biography highlights a maturing process since the old boy-band days.

“Today, like their fans, they have grown up and started families, recorded solo projects, and appeared on the Broadway stage, all while dealing with the trials and tribulations that accompany fame at an early age, including substance abuse, management snafus and even major health issues.”

" I'm down with the streets. I am looking forward to seeing all you closet fans in the stands, wearing fake mustaches and dark rimmed glasses so no one will recognize you. "

Der.... it's Poison, and I pray I make it to 80--I'll still be rockn it out! :) I hope you go, and enjoy the show! "

" I am VERY excited to be attending this BSB concert. I grew up listening to them and I still love them and their music. BTW all of you that are leaving these negative comments are probably 80 and have no reason to be going. The coliseum did not put them as a venue for you all, that is what Poision and all of that garbage is for. "

" milkman: The show may have only had 1700 in the door, but I think the show only took up half of the coliseum. Still 1700 is bad, I know. The crowd outside that started the fights was big, though ~ that counts, right? Haha. "

" TO: Pinko Commie.. Yes it is smaller than some place like a Chicago Venue or the outdoor theater in Tinley Park... But also at the same time, they are not as established as most of the places entertainers choose to perform at. Once they are in the Biz for while longer, you will see other performers that like smaller venues...come here "

" To: FtC ...THANK YOU. Yes and so true. Not to mention how much it cost to get those top ten acts.
And by the way..BSB has a new CD out and still have many dedicated fans...The Arena management brings in what they can. It is not as easy as just saying" Lets call Justin and have him stop by this summer. Oh yeah, and have a concert too" "

Pinko Commie wrote on Jun 4, 2008 11:54 PM:

" FtC - The reason they can't get bigger acts is because they built the Coliseum too small. The screwed themselves over from the beginning. "

" During the summer, most of the "A" list (and many "B" list) bands are doing outdoor venues. While this group isn't my cup of tea, I do think it's something a bit different and potentially a good "get" for the Judydome. They've generated some national press with their tour. I'm just curious as to whether the people who, when they were 12, fawned over these guys in the '90's are willing to pay to see them now. "

" Quit complaining. The ticket price is in the ballpark to a couple of gallons of gas that the 16 year olds were complaining about a couple of days ago on their way to the mall to go shopping and buy expensive Starbucks coffee. At least this show won't be about killin cops, shootin H***s etc. It'll be something the younger kids can enjoy and should. "

FtC wrote on Jun 4, 2008 3:12 PM:

" What is funny to me is how so many people who comment about the acts the Coliseum books seem to think they're not TRYING to get more current acts. Do you really think USCC management is avoiding contemporary artists? Give me a break. You can't just look at the top-ten music charts and book anybody you want! There's a lot more to it than just making a wish list. Not to mention the fact that the artists have to agree to play the USCC, too. That usually means picking Bloomington over more established Central Illinois venues in Peoria, Champaign and Springfield. If they could get the newer acts, they would. Sometimes they do. And they'll get more as the venue proves itself as a viable concert tour stop. Anyone who thinks the USCC is making a conscious effort to only book retro music acts is simply being foolish. "

" Anyone have any positive comments? The same things were said when Soulja Boy was announced, and that concert was packed full of kids. I don't claim to know anything, but just because *I* don't like the Backwards Boys, doesn't mean there is a large following somewhere around here. I'll just wait and see how many people go to the concert before I knock it. "

" Wonder when we'll get to see a band that has had a hit song in the 21st century? I'm not expecting for the Colliseum to bring in Justin Timberlake, Gwen Stefani or U2 but how about The Goo Goo Dolls, Train or another contempory group that could fill the place? "

JimmyChooGirl wrote on Jun 4, 2008 12:51 PM:

" Who the heck would pay to see these guys this summer when you can go see the original boy banders - New Kids on the Block?

And yes the cubs are going to win the World Series this year. WEE!!!! "
