Web site wants to know about all Illinois' lawyers
SPRINGFIELD -- A Web site that lets clients rate the efforts of their lawyers has stalled in its attempt to get a full roster of the 85,000 attorneys in Illinois.
The people who run Avvo.com are trying to get the state’s master list of lawyers known as the “master roll,” but have been denied by the agency that maintains the list.
On the site, potential clients can search lawyers by specialty or town, then rate them and write reviews.
On Tuesday, Avvo.com plans to file a petition with the Illinois Supreme Court to get the list, saying it’s public record.
Information on all the state’s registered lawyers already is available online through the state, but Avvo.com vice president and attorney Josh King said those listings don’t have the ratings option.
“It’s really not useful for consumers,” King said.
James Grogan, deputy administrator for the state Attorney Registration and Discipline Commission, said he couldn’t speak directly to the case of Avvo.com, but generally, the list isn’t available for “commercial or political” purposes.
Grogan said it’s up the Supreme Court, however, because in the end, the high court is in charge of the list.
Now, Avvo.com has a partial list of lawyers from Illinois using a Web search to find them. But King said that method isn’t complete.
There is no timetable for a Supreme Court decision.
