100 years ago

June 25, 1908: Former President Grover Cleveland died unexpectedly at Princeton, New Jersey. During his second term, Adlai Stevenson of Bloomington was his Vice President. Today Mr. Stevenson laments the loss as that of a close personal friend.

75 years ago

June 25, 1933: The heat wave has drawn hundreds of bathers to Miller Park beach every day since it opened June 13. The water slide and diving boards are popular, and an estimated 100 children use the wading pool daily.

50 years ago

June 25, 1958: Mike Quinn and George Shultz, both of Bloomington, are on trial in U.S. District Court for burglary at the Corn Belt Bank in Bloomington. Donna Jean Schroeder, 18, testified she gave keys to the bank to Quinn the night of the crime. She used to work there.

25 years ago

June 25, 1983: James Durbin, 12, died at St. Francis Hospital in Peoria after a three day fight for his life. He was smothered in a grain bin accident east of Bloomington. The boy’s father and rescue personnel freed him from the bin into which he had sunk, and he was rushed to Peoria.
