Ex-Chestnut counselor gets probation for sex abuse of teen

BLOOMINGTON -- A former residential counselor accused of sexually abusing a teenage girl at Chestnut Health Systems was sentenced Monday to 30 months probation and ordered to complete sex offender treatment.

Sara F. Thompson, 27, of Chicago, pleaded guilty in February to one count of aggravated criminal sexual abuse of a girl between late November and early December 2007. Thompson worked as a part-time employee for about two months before the incident.

According to Chestnut officials, Thompson was fired following the alleged inappropriate contact, which took place during a "movie night" at the facility.

McLean County Circuit Judge Charles Reynard agreed to allow Thompson to serve her probation term in Cook County, where she has moved. The importance of recommended treatment was emphasized by the judge.

“I expect the defendant to get involved in sex offender treatment – that means immediately,” said Reynard.

A 180-day jail term was stayed pending an Aug. 7 remission hearing.

A second count of abuse was dismissed as part of a plea agreement with prosecutors.

" Like many others, I'm "shocked, shocked!" to hear that a FEMALE perpetrator gets probation for a sexual crime.

Maybe this needs to be added to the Affirmative Action laws.

Geez! "

" BushIQIs6, your IQ is even worse. There is NO EXCUSE for a 27-year-old, male or female, abusing an underage person under his/her care. It is an outrage for these things to be happening. I wonder what the former director of the Children's Museum is thinking? The authorities wanted to send him to prison for several years for just taking a few harmless pictures of his son and friends, while this woman gets off with probation. Another outrage... "

" Big brother: You're making the assumption that the women had a license to take away. Most of the folks that work there, especially in their late night shift, are overpaid babysitters that have no formal education at all. I agree, this is a light sentence regardless of the person's age. "

BigBrother wrote on Jun 30, 2008 9:39 PM:

" I hope the State of Illinois has revoked the license and credentials of this counselor. This woman violated the trust of her profession as well as commiting a crime of sexual abuse. The judge gave her a very light sentence in comparison to others that have commited similar crimes. Teachers both male and female have recieved hefty jail time even when the sex was consentual. Why the judge let her off so lightly was due to the plea agreement. The states attorney takes the decision of the judge out of the picture when they negotiate plea agreements. "

" To Bush IQ: You are the one who is missing the point here and had better do some reading. This is a counselor in their late 20s having sex with a subordinate. This has nothing to do with the age of the teenager. It is a crime and you had better check the laws on that one pal. This is hardly a nothing article when you consider this counselor was put in a position of trust and authority over this victim, and plead guilty to not only violating that trust, but the teenager as well. This is hardly a nothing story to anyone with half a brain. Perhaps this omits you. "

" I'm surprised at how many bloggers jump to conclusions over a nothing article. how old is the "victim"? If she's 17 years old, it's still considered sexual abuse. If a 17 year old boy does a 16 year old girl or vice versa, and it is consentual, it's still call sexual abuse. you bloggers need to look at the criminal laws before saying something stupid. the charge is called (aggravated) criminal sexual abuse, even if it's two teenagers making out. Lurg86 wrote on Jun 30, 2008 4:02 PM:

" The main point here is that once again we have a judge who is a former head States Attorney unwilling to send a message to pedophiles. This is becoming a trend in McLean County and I just really feel sorry for the victims and their families. This being a teen in Chestnut I am sure that she was court ordered to be in Chestnut, and what I would like to know is who should be sued? Chestnut for being in charge of this youth? The court system who ordered her there for treatment? What really bothers me though is that here we have yet again a case where a person who is put in charge of youths are abusing them. This woman should not have given a plea opportunity. She should have not been given such a sweet plea deal to get away with absolutely no jail time. "

Get caught raping, touching young girls or boys - get probation and contine life.

" Flood of truth: why do you assume that? Are there other cases with Chestnut where a male counselor was convicted of sexual abuse and got hard prison time for it? What is your comparison? "

DT Resident wrote on Jun 30, 2008 3:11 PM:

" Wow...I am also surprised. I realize we don't know all the facts about what happened (like if the teenage girl was underage) but still...someone was sexually abused, doesn't matter to what extent, abuse is abuse. I have to say if it were a man being charged I wonder if the punishment would have been more severe. "
