WENONA -- An 81-year-old driver told police she doesn’t remember what led to a crash that killed a 48-year-old South Streator woman Thursday morning east of Wenona, Illinois State Police said Friday.

Paula L. Medema, 48, was westbound on Illinois 17 around 8:05 a.m. when she was struck by a car driven by a Wilma E. Leatherman, 81, of Eureka, who was northbound on County Road East 11th, police said in a statement. Leatherman failed to stop at a stop sign at that intersection, and the two vehicles -- both Ford Tauruses -- ended up in the northwest ditch.

Medema was pronounced dead at the scene at 8:59 a.m., authorities said. Leatherman was transported to St. Mary’s Hospital in Streator, where she was still a patient Friday, though her condition was not immediately available.

No citations have been issued in the crash, which remains under investigation.

" General question--can a driver have his/her license taken away or suspended for running a stop sign and causing the death of the other driver?

I'm asking this question because a fellow blogger had his comment deleted from this article and I thought that was a bit unfair unless by law Pantagraph can't print his comment (or this one) because an investigation is still underway. "

" Knowing the Medema family, and having Nick as a student the past two years, I know this is a class act family. My thoughts and prayers go to the Medema family, and also the Woodland, and Streator community. "
