Police fire pepper balls, arrest 9 at Peoria fest

PEORIA, Ill. -- Authorities in Peoria say police fired pepper balls into an angry mob of about 100 people who were fighting during the last night of the city’s Heart of Illinois Fair.

Police say nine people were arrested Saturday night. At least one 16-year-old boy was injured in the fighting and taken to a hospital.

Police used a Taser to subdue one teenage girl and two girls were attacked by between five and 10 people near their car. Off-duty officers broke up mobs in the fair parking lot.

Authorities say the fighting broke out when juveniles who were attending the fair without parental supervision were forced to leave.

Peoria officials say they increased security at this year’s fair after large fights at other area festivals.

" It actually sounds like Pontiac Resident may be a parent, a parent unwilling to accept responsibility for the actions of their children and finds it easier to push the blame on someone else.

Now, for anyone to say Bloomington/Normal is the next Chicago, such a silly statement. It's very simple mathematics-the population of Bloomington-71,000, roughly, the population of Normal-50,000 roughly. Combining the population of the two towns, and using a per capita population, B/N's crime rate and gang activity doesn't even come close to Chicago, with a population of roughly 3 million. So don't worry B/N, you are not even close. "

" Good for the Peoria Police Department. This is what the Bloomington PD should have done on Orlando. "

" Hey! This may be the first glimpse of anything approaching healthy rebellion among today's youth. Until now, kids have been over-occupied with cellphones, computer games--that nevertheless manage to facilitate the inculcation of the cancerous American war culture--and instant messaging via the internet. These young cornpods have for once embarked on something comparable to FEELINGS. I congratulate them! And I suspect that the emergence of the Corporate-American military-industrial police-state has finally clued them into the realization that government-sponsored fear, poverty, and population control promises to make their lives miserable should they continue to remain insensate regarding such matters. Right on.

" What do you expect teachers to do? Our liberal legislators have tied their hands. No corporal punishment, no control in the classrooms, parents that won't back the school when their little darlings cause problems, and it goes on and on. This isn't a problem to be solved by government and society. This is a problem to be solved by parents and guardians. There's been a lot of comments about needing Charles Bronson again. DON'T be suprised when this starts to happen. It's just a matter of time!!! "

" I want teachers to teach children English, Math, History, and Science. Parents should teach them how to act in public. I'm sick of teachers and school systems being expected to "do it all". "

" Pontiac Resident, get a clue. The parents have a great deal more to do with the behavior of a child than a teacher; but as a teacher, OK, let me fix it; just don't sue me when I do. THE PARENTS MUST DO THEIR PART and quit blaming the schools. "

" TO Pontiac Resident: Please explain how educators in mid-July would have any responsibility for what took place? In fact, do you have kids? Do you know what some kids are capable of? I will be checking back for your response... "

" I heard it all started because they ran out of corn dogs. A couple of carnival workers tried to talk the teens into purchasing gator bites as a replacement - and all h*ll broke loose. Of course, I haven't confirmed any of this, but that's what I heard from an unreliable source. "

" What is with these punks and their cowardly mob mentality? Once again I too have to agree that this all boils down to their home lives of these kids! Where are these kids parents or do they just not care? I tend to think alot of these misguided youth have parents that were also lawbreakers or mabey they still are! "

" @PontiacResident....I think your intention was correct, but to put this blame on the teachers and not the parents OR their IDIOT kids weakens your statement. Teachers make a LOT of money if one were to convert their salary to the hourly pay the rest of us live on, but, that pay no matter how high is to INSTRUCT not raise our children. that's OUR jobs. "

" cat55ire-Seriously? Are you surprised by this happening in Peoria. They have had issues for quite some time with gangs, but they can manage to keep it away from media attention. But, I think everyone that lives in Peoria have never been in denial that there is a gang issue. Plus the Peoria PD, are able to deal with these issues a little more efficiently than B/N PD. "

" Pontiac resident: As a teacher, you can't be serious! The parents are the ones letting them run around town unsupervised. If you are serious, then you are part of the problem. The thinking: Let everybody else be responsible for my kids, I am too busy to be a part of my childs life. "

" These are probably the same teens that got arrested for blatently jaywalking last year & were "let off" because they played the race card. They were supposed to attend assemblies to teach them respect (ha).

These kids have no respect. I don't even want to go to Peoria anymore. I'll stay on my side of the river. These kids weren't taught respect from their parents, they are thugs! "

Pontiac Resident wrote on Jul 21, 2008 6:35 AM:

" Has our youths destroyed an American tradition of going to county or local fairs? Nobody wants to take their young children to fairs only to be in the middle of violence. Once again, I think education is the key to stopping this? More resposibility for the educators! We pay 80% of our taxes to the educational system, in this country. THEY MUST STEP UP AND DO THEIR PART! "
