Public won't likely get a chance to see President Bush

SPRINGFIELD -- President Bush’s visit to Peoria Friday likely will be a relatively brief one, including a private lunch-time fundraiser and no scheduled public events.

Bush plans to attend a $500-a-head lunch for Republican state Rep. Aaron Schock of Peoria. Schock is running against Democrat Colleen Callahan of Kickapoo to succeed retiring U.S. Rep. Ray LaHood in Illinois’ 18th Congressional District.

A Bush spokesman said no other public events have been announced, but the president plans to honor Peorian Roy Storey for his volunteer work for schools. Country singer Lee Greenwood also will attend the fundraiser.

Virginia Weaver, whose family is hosting the event, said she is excited about hosting the president. She didn’t say how the farm was selected.

“We’re just lucky, I guess,” Weaver said. “Very lucky.”

Friday will be Bush’s second trip to central Illinois in two years. Early last year, he delivered a speech on the economy at an East Peoria Caterpillar Inc. plant.

This year’s trip comes as an election looms and Bush is dealing with low approval ratings across the country.

With that in mind, Callahan last week criticized Schock for getting Bush’s support, saying it meant her opponent was aligning himself with the president’s policies.

" who cares about president bonehead coming here? he has destroyed this country's standing on the world stage and drained the economy by borrowing from evil countries to fund this war. how else are we supporting this losing war without raising taxes? uh.... borrowing from china and saudi arabia. so don't you americans complain about foreigners buying up u.s. property. we got what we deserved by voting in pres bonehead "

" I wouldn't leave the comfort of my home to see this man let alone pay $500 to eat with him. That meal cost no where near that much money, so who gets the rest of the $490.00? If he wants a brief visit, I say just fly over the area and say he was there. "

" BJR, even the most Republican of analysts will tell you that it will take 10 years minimum for new oil to become available and even then, will make little difference in price. I'd rather not waste the resources or time on drilling and put it straight into new technology.

Anyway, I didn't think you guys cared about oil prices. Its all supply and demand and we should just cancel our cell phones and electrical service if we can't afford gas. "

BJR wrote on Jul 24, 2008 11:32 AM:

" Ingenius Meh, so for the next 15-20 years we should pay extremely high gas prices while we try and create new power sources. The whole time ignoring our own vast oil resources right here in the U.S. During that time, continuing to pump billions of dollars over to middle eastern countries. Great idea!!! So why you and the dems are feeling good about no more oil wells in the U.S. China, Venezuala, India, and other countries are now exploring and will be drilling for oil not far off our coastline. Seriously, you need to watch more than Matthews and Olbermann. "

I think you are right about that. *L* I give the guy props, I don't know any other politicians that would have their office in the area of Peoria where he has his. "

" BJR, read what I said again. I said break our oil addiction. That means electric cars, more nuke plants, wind farms, more R&D into battery/energy storage technology and solar tech. Oil is a dinosaur and we need to stop using it for energy. Obama is far more likely than an anti-science Republican to fund the needed R&D although I doubt he will go far enough for my liking.

McCain's plan for 45 nuclear plants is the only thing that I can agree with him on and that's assuming that he knows what a nuclear plant is which is a pretty big assumption. "

" Do as I say not as I do...if you think like a Democrat politician. They avoided paying tax on gas in Colorado, but think you the lowly citizen should pay it. "

BJR wrote on Jul 24, 2008 9:42 AM:

" Meh, you make no sense, what is your reading level again?? BHO has taken more bundled money and PAC money than McCain. Plus BHO has received lots of money from Hollywood. As far as your stance on breaking our dependence on foreign oil, you are going to vote McCain then right? Seeing that your beloved BHO will not drill here or build any nuke plants, I am guessing you have converted. BHO and his party are ok with the rising cost of gas. So much, they were avoiding CO state taxes by taking gas from the city pumps to avoid the 40 cents plus in taxation. "

" floyd, I'm sure that Obama's millions of small donations are all coming from evil Hollywood liberals. In fact, Madonna just sent me some cash to send to the Obama campaign. I get to keep 25% of what she sends me. Its great.

BJR, Obama isn't my gawd or messiah and I don't agree with him on Afghanistan. We need to devote maximum resources to breaking our oil addiction and wasting money in the Middle East isn't going to help. Terrorism isn't the biggest threat facing America, its the fact that our energy supplies are controlled by people who don't like us. "

BJR wrote on Jul 24, 2008 7:47 AM:

" Wow Meh, that is so original. Since the Messiah is now advocating troops remaining in Iraq and more to Afghanistan, as a staunch liberal, I am sure you will be signing up to serve your master. Oh, wait, you are to busy here drinking the BHO flavored Kool-Aid. I bet you are even one of those Manson style followers changing your middle name to Hussein to feel cool. "

floyd wrote on Jul 24, 2008 7:16 AM:

" wanderwls. Perhaps you should direct that statement to your good ol' buddy Obama who has raised tons more money than McCain and lots of it comes from the disfunctional hollywood bozos. "

" When it comes to shinning GW's boots, Shock will make LaHood look like a rebel. He needs to be defeated at any cost by anyone.
Not that anyone would be better, but no one could be worse. We've had enough of LaHood in my district.
Shock's ideas about war make McCain look like a pansy. "

" Maybe W should take a trip to the South Side and Near North to see what that $500 a plate could do for the homeless and poor families that the W economy is strangling. But, I'm sure young Schock will make a great impact for those if he is elected. They are both oblivious to what is really going on. George has become wealthier in the past 8 years and Aaron will accumulate wealth in his tenures. "
